Please sir, can I have some more?

Post » Mon Aug 19, 2013 4:33 am

I'm sure many people have already seen it but I highly recommend the video "Why the elder scrolls is not dumbing down".

Now you see, I'm not so certain that these whingers complaints should be taken so seriously. By and large, I would dare say the majority of people are satisfied (and yes, that includes the hardcoe, the rp'ers etc) with Skyrim. I sure am. I've played since Morrowind.

I think it's just a case of people being natural pessimists and even attention seeking in some cases. Sailing against the wind and all that.

So please beth, go ahead and make some moar.

So... what was the point of this particular thread were you couldn't interject such a statement into another corresponding thread? is this another response to the fabled "torrent of complaint threads" I've been hearing about since and before 11/11/11?

as for my thoughts? because of the accolades, the praise, the monetary gain some believe any complaints are by and large pointless? imo -many- those with such views are simply blinded by the bloom of moonshadow and rarely if ever take a good look at what they are doing, or generally cared very little for what was lost.

I'm not saying you should be up in arms and have your enjoyment utterly ruined by said faults, nothing is perfect. but to act as if Skyrims perfect the moment someone jots down some of their concerns is asinine. let people say their peace and get off your high horse, and should one walk up to you with themselves on their horses, look on with confidence not disdain.

that said yes Beth please make more, the sooner TESVI comes the sooner I can stop going back to Skyrim to get my TES fix.

Jingles has good points, but I disagree with a few of them. Either way, he is a great LPer and I LOVE Skyrim xD

I agree, up to a point. In my otherwise career I've been on enough committees and panels to spot a complaint-addict when I see one.

Each TES game is different. I maintain Morrowind is the best of the 'modern' TES games. But this doesn't mean that Oblivion and Skyrim ought to be judged solely in those terms, because they are blockbuster games, they're different. Bethesda always manage to imbue these titles with their unique flair, even the high fantasy of Oblivion feels somehow apart. I find that balancing act challenging, rather than 'dumbed down'.

Gameplay-wise... while I do enjoy the less sophisticated mechanics of Morrowind, I'm just a glutton for punishment. Bethesda are a commercial company and they need to make money, that means making their products easier to pick-up-and-play, it's an immutable fact of the business. I think that's perfectly reasonable, the Elder Scrolls can't just stay in stasis forever and ever, it must change.

It's funner than it was in Morrowind or Oblivion. Dumbed down or not, I like it!

Speak for your self OP.

Believe it or not but we actually payed for this game. We weren't just given it for free. That being said, people are going to criticize the game so the next one won't have the same flaws as the last one. With criticism, the developers can improve on the next game.

Skyrim has tonnes of flaws especially with its story and mechanics. I feel it is being dumbed down for a wider audience which I suspect will be more apparent in the next ES.

I don't overlook Skyrim's problems or see it through rose colored glasses but I choose it over the other games I've played and that's enough.

Love TES. :tes:

You hate Oblivion too, right? I think I remember some of your posts back in the day about how bad Oblivion was.

depends what you mean on back in the day, if you mean after or the few years following Oblivions release I didn't frequent Gen discussion for Oblivion, I hovered in the modding section. hate is such a strong word, and yes I have said I -HATE- Oblivion before, but I got over myself. however I'm not a born again TES-Forumer I did not and still don't see Oblivion as awesome sauce compared to Skyrim. I beat it several times, modded the hell out of it and left it after Skyrim rolled in and I don't intend on ever going back no matter how much I miss attributes and spell making.

the gist of what I'm saying? yeah I don't like Oblivion, to me its the start of all that -to garner a wider audience crap- and the nauseating references to Lotr everywhere. I won't respect it nearly as I do Morrowind and to an extent Skyrim, even though Skyrim in many ways pisses me off.

If you look at the forums now: 'Please sir, can I have some more?' followed by , 'No Sir, I Did Not Like It'.

You're not allowed to point out the flaws within Skyrim because it's the best game ever. /sarcasm

Okay so i'm fairly new to Skyrim and its the only Elder Scrolls game I've played, so can someone tell me why people don't like it and why its considered to be dumbed down?

if you don't feel its dumbed down, dont let views outside of your taint your perception. if you are interested play the predecessors for yourself and decide for yourself.

Because many of the things that were well done were removed to please the filthy casuals.

You could kill any NPC, you can't now because some are essential.

And a whole bunch of other things.

Oh okay I see what you mean. I always thought when someone said dumbed down they meant the combat was easier, which I could never understand because it always seems hard to me  . Of course I probably am one of those filthy casuals.

What this guy said. I can't think of anyway to say it better.

Um, that's not right, Oblivion had essential NPCs too.

That shot wasn't aimed at you I don't think. It's a take on a remark some people make about some things being removed that could be convoluted and confusing if not done correctly. For what it's worth I've played Oblivion as well and don't belive the series has gotten any dumber, just more streamlined and easier for people to navigate who haven't been exposed to older RPG's or pencil and paper RPG's like AD&D.
