Please no spiders

What if they're like the spiders from the Avernum games?

Don't u think that having such an overwhelming fear of something could really add to the immersion of the game. I'd love to be so scared of something in Skyrim that I feared each encounter.

Look at it that way.

Alternatively, curing a phobia requires you to get used to the item of your phobia via "forced" encounters. You have to agree that the spiders in Skyrim really pose NO risk for your personal health. So they would make a perfect first stage for arachnophobia cure.

So, want to play Skyrim? Better force yourself to get over that fear :P

You forget that fears/phobias aren't rational. If I see a spider I just want to get the hell away from it. I don't want to hurt it, so I get someone else to throw it outside, or kill it if they want to; frankly I don't care.

Also, if you were referring to me as one of the people who wants them removed, you're wrong. I don't care if there are spiders in a video game; as I said, the big-ass ones in DA:O didn't do me anything.

Well not you specifically, anyone demanding their removal. It's unreasonable and I hope Beth do not remove them, I don't think they will though. The more enemies the better IMO, anyone should just remember that it's a game and they are just a bunch of pixels. (And that's not aimed at you either as you've said the ones in DA:O don't bother you) If anything, it should give those with phobias more impetous to kill them quickly and be relieved afterwards. Makes it exciting.

I'm not forgetting phobias aren't rational either, I have a fear/phobia of great white sharks, (Thankyou Speilberg) even though I've never seen one nor will I ever most likely. How's that for irrational? Just something about being submersed in gloomy, murky water where anything large with a mouthfull of teeth can come up behind you *shudder* and you wouldn't see it until the last moment. Wouldn't stop me from diving in water in the game though, and wouldn't dream for a second demanding they remove large bodies of water.

What is fear really? It's an emotion, am I right? Now, what is it they say about emotions... Oh, that's right. You can't control them!

Actually fear is more of a defense mechanism. Like flinching. Either way this point is moot because you can control emotions (and defense mechanisms) in a matter of speaking. There is a "game" on the internet like wheres waldo. The only thing is about a minute into looking for the character (who isn't on the screen) a picture of a zombified girl appears and there is a bloodcurdling scream. Someone here uses the pic as an avatar. I saw this once and used to be so scared I couldn't be in the dark. I had to beat it. So I turned on my shower, turned off the light and got in. The image repeatedly flashed in my mind, sending jolts of fear throughout my body. But I focused on other things like the water. Now I can block it out completely.

I also never raise my voice in anger, cry when I am sad, feel hopeless, nervous, or hatred towards things because letting your emotions govern your actions is as irrational as emotions themselves. Once you realize this they are easy to control.

Because your wishes are irrational and trying to change an entire game to appeal to what you want instead of the consensus of the masses. If every organization catered to the single loud voice in the back nothing would ever be done correctly.

Think of the game play possibilities as a Arachnophobic Character. Clearing out a cave only to notice the giant freaky ass spider watching you from a poorly lit corner. It bounds after you and you take off down the corridor running for you life. I think it would be fun. I know a few times in STALKER where I was just terrified by some creature chasing me through some caves was some of the most interesting gaming I can recall. I think that creature we can fear would be a great benefit in Skyrim and I hope they scare me to death.

Well, they obviously can't remove them from the game because they would then have to cater to everyone's phobias and we'd be left without a game.

I suggest you use the game as a way to get over your phobia. Facing them in the game enough might help you with facing them in real life. Remember, fear is only in your mind! You can ultimately defeat it with enough willpower and mental fortitude. :)

I fully agree to the fullest  . I mean why the Deadra would they include spiders! Spiders aren't supposed to survive in a cold climate like Skyrim. Spiders don't fit in, really. If they have to be in the game, they should live in caverns, not out in the open.

Which is why they will remain inside caves and underground and stuff probably.

Off topic i scream louder then my wife when i run into a spider is that a bad thing?

Depends on how your wife feels.

And back on topic, I understand why you want them out, its one of the few good reasons I've heard for removing something, but im sure there is an alternative.
Maybe the fear will enhance the game? Like the small amount of terror I felt the first time i went through an oblivion gate, which I never experience again and miss...
Maybe they can be an enemy you just avoid until you find an easy way to deal with them, Im sure you can make some uber spell just to deal with them...

In fact that sounds like a half decent idea for a mod, a lesser power that will kill any spider, but only spiders... Hmmm...

I for one want giant spiders, they will be fun to smash.

A phobia isn't a good reason to remove something. People with phobia should seek to cure them, not ask the worlds to erase what they fear.

Personally, I love that spiders are back with a vengeance, look how big they are now.

How did you deal with the Spider Daedra in OB?

This. Spider Daedra and Will o' the Wisps are refueling stations for my Atronach. Didn't you already have to deal with tons of these gals in Oblivion?

A true phobia is irrational and can't be cured. Managed is even out of some peoples range.
Does it make sense for bethesda to remove them? No, does it make sense for that person and a large group of people? Yes.
A phobia is a better reason to remove something than when they removed crossbows, well for no reason at all, or how some people want spell scrolls removed because they don't use them.

:chaos:

Spiders? One might think that Bethesda might be trying to scare players.

Spoiler
That's the point.

Fear is one of the most fundamental emotions and if a game can actually make you feel afraid, then it's doing its job well.
Consider yourself lucky that you get to enjoy the game so much.

Dude, excatly! I have no phobias that would affect me in games.Well I do have a fear of darkness but somehow it doesnt freak me out in games.I wish my phobia would be strong as yours.Makes me sink deeper in the game.

I hate spiders. I often feel much better about myself after killing a huge one in a game.

Besides, the big unrealistic ones never scare me as much as the small creepy crally ones.

No Spiders?!?! Nonsense.

They are a reviled enemy - no reason to take them out (especially if the only reason is that it "creeps" people out - that's not a reason for exclusion).

Bring on the arachnids! I hate them like a passion, and will kill Every Single One I can find.

Now that's a straight solution ha ha! I never liked spiders in games either, but asking their removal is a bit too drastic. What if someone is afraid of snow, what should be done?

so i was looking through the gameinformer info and saw that one of the enemy types is giant spiders. Well the problem with that is i have very severe arachnophobia. Every time bethesda comes out with a new game, i hope they leave out spiders but it looks like i know i wont be getting this game months before it comes out. I guess the point of this thread is to ask bethesda to remove spiders from the game... or even just reskin them to look like some other insect.

Ow honey that's so cute!

What about people with phobia of water? Should they remove it as well?
When the game comes out, I suggest you to simply mod it and change the skin of the spiders. Nothing complicated, with a tiny search for tutorial everyone can do that kind of stuff.

Cause most of the players don't want giant spiders to disappear. It's part of the TES series.

Well, I'll tell you there's no better place to face your fears than in a video game where your actions have no consequences...

I understand a fear of spiders. There are spiders in Iraq as big as footballs. I woke up one night to the feeling of a spider crawling from my leg to my face. The whole reason we respond so sensitively to tickling is so we can react to those predators. But you can't demand that something be removed because some people have a problem with it. This is like the guns in ET being changed to walkie talkies because people had a problem with feds having guns in a children's movie.

So if you're ticklish, you also have a fear of spiders? There might be some truth to that, because every ticklish girlfriend I have had has been afraid of spiders. I don't know what that means, though.

On a side note, I don't think it would be that hard for Bethesda to put a toggle that just removes them from the spawn probabilities for all areas.
