Please no spiders

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:15 pm

so i was looking through the gameinformer info and saw that one of the enemy types is giant spiders. Well the problem with that is i have very severe arachnophobia. Every time bethesda comes out with a new game, i hope they leave out spiders but it looks like i know i wont be getting this game months before it comes out. I guess the point of this thread is to ask bethesda to remove spiders from the game... or even just reskin them to look like some other insect.

If you are lucky, there might be a modder that is quick to make a mod that switches the spiders with another creature.

I have the same phobia man i hate those tiny eight legged bastards.

Interesting case. I recall any Overhaul Mod that was made in Oblivion have No Spider file for ya very reason. Anyways, who knows? Maybe ya might not run into one in the game, if ya lucky.

Said it already: delete the meshes. Unless you've also got xanthoexclamationophobia, or something. :hehe:

But I'd really suggest learning to cope with it through games. Those things in there are far more horrid than anything in real life.

I dislike spiders as well. I mean, a lot. I go sleep in another room if there is a particularly large one.

But, in fiction or documentaries I actually find them interesting, because they have this creep factor. I remember seeing 8 legged freaks mostly with my eyes closed and very creeped out, but it was a fun ride.

Just remember that they arent real. Try to use it as something that gives the game that extra bit of spice, chills down your spine.

Try not to avoid any and all confrontations with what you are afraid of, it will only make your fear grow stronger. Tell yourself it is just pixels, there is nothing real about them. Use it as a way to help make your fear less. After all, you get to hack em, shoot arrows at them, or set em on fire with a spell :)

There is already a thread on this. I don't like the way spiders look but luckily this is Elder Scrolls, so they will probably release a construction kit.

Perhaps the cause of the phobia. :shifty:

But yes, I'd say a mod will be made to reskin them/remove them.

I wouldn't imagine the giant spiders will be common enemies. They'll probably only reside in certain dungeons/caves. Think Deathclaws in New Vegas.

xanthoexclamationophobia

Seeing that is giving me hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia!

Spiders are awesome as enemies. If you don't want them, remove the meshes in the Skyrim/Data/Meshes folder. Assuming your getting it for the pc.

Not really fond of spiders myself, I used to be scared of them too. Or the thought of them crawling on me. Gone away in years as I just kill them quick or get them out the way. Killing a wolf spider always boosts the ego.(Make no mistake I still don't like them, feel most likely the same way you do perfectly. That said I don't mind virtual revenge on em.)

If you get it on the 360 there isn't much to do about it. Best advice then is probably a ranged character like a mage or someone good with bows or spears if they add them back in. Sure you still see them but it means you don't need to go near it or see up close battle with it like if you were using melee weapons like a sword which would be way worse.

Sorry that there isn't any other options :/ Using spells or a bow shouldn't be that bad for those pesky meanies though. xD

Well that makes it easy then- since mods aren't an option, your choices are:

A: Get over the phobia and enjoy the game...or

B: If unable to get over the phobia, don't bother buying the game...or

C: Start saving for a PC that can handle the game so you can mod those buggers out.

Sorry man but we can't just get rid of a creature just because some people have a phobia. If you're on the PC however just mod them out. :)

I would take it as a opportunity to kill a giant spider if you afraid. It can't kill you or even hurt you in real life so it can only make you stronger right?

Well I guess you have 3 options
  • Don't buy the game, which will certainly be fantastic
  • Try to overcome your fear enough to play it
  • Get a better PC. You can build one yourself these days for not too much money, especially if you've already got monitor and speakers

There's no way they are getting rid of the spiders now. Sorry about your predicament but I just don't think it's going to happen.

EDIT: ROFL that's what I get for not reading the whole page, Alois Hammer already posted pretty much the same thing.

When I was little my friend had a game called awesome possum and it freaked me out. Up until then I had never seen a death animation where the body decayed.(gameover screen gave me nightmares) It was silly but I got over it.You never really get over the root cause though I beat Manhunt 2's uncut PC version twice now but that awesome possum game still makes me cringe. (I hope skyrim has gore!!)

Yeah, I went on about this when someone started the whole "No spiders in New Vegas please, I'm arachnophobic" thing.

Imagine a future where all the phobics out there get their way: No spiders in games for the arachnophobes, no dark enclosed spaces (ie, dungeons/caves) because of the claustrophobics, no swimming allowed because it might scare the hydrophobes, no big outdoor spaces for fear of upsetting folks with agoraphobia.

The list of phobias is long enough to ultimately lead to nothing being allowed in games since it would bother someone. I think "Deal with it or don't play the game" is a far better option than "tailor games to avoid any phobias people may have" myself.

I absolutely loath spiders too, but that's what makes it fun in my opinion. I love the idea of having an opponent that scares the absolute bujeezus out of me, it gives the game an element of excitement (and the adrenaline of pure terror).

theres not much reason to fear anything, even in the real world... so why fear whats in video games?

also, if bethesda went and took things out that a few people had phobias over... i think we could kiss TES goodbye.
