Please subdivide Miscellaneous!

Post » Fri Jan 22, 2016 11:03 am

Because nearly all Misc items are weightless, it is the one area of Inventory that gets seriously bloated. Further, many things can't be offloaded. I am quite tired of going into Inventory just to find what in Misc I just vacuumed up. "Oops! Was that a holotape I just saw? What was the title?"

Bring back the key chain! Do I really need to have 25+ keys scattered throughout the list?

Holotapes -- which, frankly, is a stupid label for things with no Visual component -- should be grouped together.

Magazines & Comic Books

Video Games

Etc.

I would love to see this happen. The Misc file is an absolute mess. It helps if you at least offload bobbleheads into the bobblehead display stand and offload magazines into the magazine racks.

Another thing that really bugs me here is that although most misc items are weightless, not all of them are. Stuff like the burnt books are .5 pounds each. I initially assumed that burnt books were just classified as junk. Then I started noticing that my 'empty weight' was higher than it should have been. It was because I was carrying about 20 burnt books/textbooks which added up to an extra 10 pounds. I really don't get why these end up in the misc file instead of the junk file. And for that matter, the things can't even be scrapped. I don't get it.

Honestly the inventory system in general in this game needs a major overhaul. I want a slot for all of my personal items that I carry with me. My outfit(s), armor, weapons, meds, and all of the stuff that I always keep on hand would go in this slot. And I want an "empty all" button to empty everything that's not in this slot all at once. These slots really need to be branched to some extent, as you pointed out. The misc. slot should have sections for holotapes (I agree about the name, it doesn't make sense), magazines, bobbleheads, quest items and a "miscellaneous slot" within the miscellaneous slot.

Yeah, I'd really like some way to filter the various Quest items - either through a "Quest Items" tab, or just an extra filter option in Misc.

And a keyring, of course.

Having magazine stands and bobble head stands has become a necessity just to shorten the list of misc items on your Pip-Boy. I've also built containers in my settlement to store the misc items I don't need to carry with me: overdue books, documents I've seen, holotapes I've seen, etc., in separate containers. That leaves only keys and terminal passwords in my Pip-Boy. And when I need to find misc items, they will be much easier to find in my sorted containers back home. And when I get new misc items in my Pip-Boy, I don't have to spend 5 minutes to scroll down the list to find them.

Having an entire tab only for keys and password, like we add in skyrim, wouldnt be useless too.

About bobbleheads, what I was surprised at when I first saw it was how you put them down. In F3 you just clicked on the stand and it displayed them instantly because it was an activator that ran a script. Now it comes up like a container and you've got to search for the bobbleheads and put them in one by one, which if your inv is as you say bloated, takes a bit longer. It's probably the same script as the bookshelves, and the one in Skyrim too.

A minor niggle yes, but still.

Have you considered just putting all those things where they belong? Holotapes in a container (what are you going to do with them after you've listened to them?); magazines and comic books on a magazine rack; bobble heads on a bobble-head stand; etc...

You end up with enough misc crap in your inventory (yes, including keys) that there really is no reason to hold on to all the extraneous holotapes, notes and junk that ends up there.

BTW: You actually play those stupid videogames? I had enough of that junk in the '80s. I do not need nostalgia.

I agree that a more refined system of organizing inventory would be much appreciated, though, as several people have mentioned here, we always can dump the items into containers in our settlements. Although, if you are running through a dungeon or picking up everything in sight as you travel, it does get a bit overwhelming, and when you finally travel back home to do an inventory cleanup, that's when subsections in the inventory would be helpful.

On a similar note, it would be awesome if our quest log could be subdivided by, for example, Main Story, Minutemen, Railroad, Brotherhood of Steel, Institute, Diamond City, etc. It gets a bit overwhelming with just the main list and a disorganized Miscellaneous section.

I like the quest one. Would make sense. 1/2 the time I can't remember what faction belongs to what quest and they certainly don't give you very much information.

maybe for DLC? hint, hint BETH!

But sounds like an awfully easy mod that could be done, if it hasn't been already!

Wait till the creation kit comes out, they had great item sorting mods for Skyrim. I'm only half ass playing this game till the creation kit is released. I've had the game since day 1 and I'm only level 22. If I owned a console I would never even think about buying this type of game.

I agree and I also would really be happy with at least a key ring! There's no need to have all these single keys sitting in Misc. And yes, I do have a desk where I keep unnecessary Holotapes and letters etc. However, the keys sill take up a lot of space and when I pick up a new holotape or scrap of paper, I have to remember what it was called, because I still have to endlessly scroll through lots of keys...

True that. I was surprised an inventory transfer box opened. I was even more surprised that my inventory showed things that CAN NOT be transferred onto the bobble-head stand. Same with magazines. Why do I need to sort through 50 keys and tapes to find the ONLY THING that can be placed on a magazine rack or shelf? Please fix this at least if nothing else.

I've made it a habit of dropping everything I can from the MISC list (except bobby pins of course) into a trash can I keep in my house. But that still leaves keys and current quest items in the inventory.

Even offloading NON-quest holotapes still left me with over a dozen quest holotapes. All the Eddie Winter holotapes + several Lost Patrol holotapes + plus several others. Quest items aren't removable until the quest is complete... and those things add up quickly.

As for the bobbleheads, I've never actually created an actual character domicile/base of operations. Existing structures all look like **** that I would never want to reside in. And trying to construct a residence with the tools we have at the moment end up looking like they were assembled by a crew of chimpanzees. So I use Sanctuary Hills for my primary Crafting center, and when I ever feel like taking a nap (just to save on healing items and/or to get the Well-rested perk), I just flop onto the nearest unoccupied bed. As such, I've never felt that any location was safe enough to leave a bobblehead stand.

Magazines and comic books, I just sell those to get them out of Inventory.

On topic, definitely agree that we need better inventory management in general (a recently picked up tab would be most welcome as well). Off topic, buy the house in DC.

I'm not sure if you're exaggerating or just have no experience with the settlement building in this game, but I've spent a LOT of time building my settlements in this game, and I can assure you that they don't look like they were assembled by a crew of chimpanzees. They look like they were assembled by a skilled carpenter.

One of the first things I will be modding is that messy Misc section, here I will do Beth's work for them...

"BOOK"

"NOTE"

"QUEST"

"MAG"

"BOBBLE"

"HOLO"

"OTHER"

And a keyring for... yeah...

Carpenters have quantum powers? Because... those things float...

This. Plus inevitable gaps, no windows, the corner sections always look .... pitiful, wall sections can't connect outside of a 0-degree angle change, etc., et al. My settlement construction consists entirely of a perimeter palisade for defense and using the Small prefab Shack and/or the Big prefab Shack.
