Please tell me there will be water-life

Although I like the idea of more waterlife, I'm not sure whether we should be able to be too involved on it. Considering the location, water makes a better obstacle than mountains, as getting your clothes wet in the frozen north can mean unavoidable death within minutes.

There was one in Oblivion :) But it was hostile...

What? No there wasn't... I'd remember something as awesome as that.

not if you can build a fire fast enough.

are argonians cold-blooded? if they're cold-blooded that'd be a huge advantage if there's freezing water that kills you with hypothermia

I'm not a Lore-Expert, and i don't know this does/can exist, but what about an underwater argonian community? I think that it'd be awesome if they had one.

Yeah i assumed he meant it was on a mod. I would have remembered too. There was nothing interesting in the water in Oblivion

Avatar is the most overrated movie of all time but hey, kudos to JC for not pulling a Spielberg and coveting the film like E.T.
Don't get me wrong, It was an alright movie but some movies just shouldn't have sequels.
I have no problem skipping movies, especially when I didn't love the first one.
Avatar 2 will be easier to skip than Transformers 2 and Percy Jackson 2 combined.

Avatar was a movie about catgirls in fur bikinis flying dragons and fighting gunships, it’s a concept it’s hard to make bad movies about, very hard if you have unlimited budget and rendering farms, I loved it.
Its only problem was that it took it self to serious for a movie about catgirls in fur bikinis flying dragons and some fans took it even more seriously.

As I understand it’s coming a new movie from JC with underwater action, it’s not avatar 2 who will come later, it would be stupid not to release a follow up on the bestselling movie in history.

I think it may, With the introduction of jobs there may be fishing! Somthing has to be caught on those poles.

IDK how the convo got onto Avatar but yes it is the worst most unoriginal movie ever.

Bring it back, maybe. Morrowind actually had underwater terrain...grottos, shipwrecks, "real" Dreugh instead of those goofy "Land Dreugh," chests..."introduce water life AT LAST" indeed.

Yes, will be happy with something like Morrowind’s water, perhaps less slaughterfish and more peaceful standard fish and it would be perfect.

I certainly hope there is a great abundance of life in every nook and cranny of the game. I think a lot of people have missed it but there is one screen shot with a fish in it. In the pic of the barmaid look in the background above the second lady. Mounted on the wall is a pretty awesome looking fishy... I'm thinkin new slaughter fish design (part of its head is obscured by the horns on the light fixture). Check out the pic posted on the forums here from game reactor, you might need to zoom in a bit :P

I've been trying to find detailed maps of skyrim that show the lakes and rivers, not had to much luck so far.
I read somewhere that fishing is in,whether we can actually fish ourselves, i don't know.
In one of the video's on GI website,it does show the skyrim map,it does look like there will be plenty of water.
Lakes, rivers etc. Also in the video,he points to meat thats lootable, and horker meat was there.
I say we can expect more water life in skyrim. You see fish leaping out of rivers etc, horker meat was shown.
Also what looked a walrus was in concept art.We will have more waterlife i think ,but to what extent we do not know yet.
But i also want underwater plants etc, shipwrecks (as some have mentioned ) big/bigish sea creature's.
We'll have to wait and see,but bethesda has not shown the best stuff yet,far from it in my view :)

I know there will be some considering GI article mentioned on page 48 "to watch fish leap among the rocks heading upstream" and I think i heard it elsewhere too.

I recall one mention of fish jumping out of rapids, but that's the only thing I've heard of water life in Skyrim, and fish were in past games too, just limited to slaughter fish, and they didn't jump out of water, though they could occassionally spawn ouside of the water due to a glitch, but that's different. I'm certainly hoping Skyrim will improve upon this area, but only time will tell.

Bring it back, maybe. Morrowind actually had underwater terrain...grottos, shipwrecks, "real" Dreugh instead of those goofy "Land Dreugh," chests..."introduce water life AT LAST" indeed.

Morrowind was better than Oblivion in this regard, but not by that much. There were three types of underwater creatures, but two were just slaughterfish of different sizes, and one was the already mentioned dreugh. The presence of kelp was nice, in Oblivion there was seaweed, but it was only used in a few select places. Mostly, what made Morrowind's underwater exploration was that there was actually SOMETHING worth while under the water, there were grottos, shipwrecks, and even the occassional entrance to a ruin, in Oblivion, there was pretty much no reason to go swimming except to get to the other side of a body of water, the pearls didn't make it worth while because their value was so low compared to the other gems. In the end, though, underwater exploration has always been pretty boring compared to land exploration in the Elder Scrolls. And I can understand Bethesda putting the primary focus of the action on the land, of course, but even so, if you're going to let us explore under water at all, you should put something down there. When you can make the above water landscapes as detailed as the screenshots we've seen of Skyrim, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a bit of that detail to be seen under water as well.

Going back to Morrowind would be an improvement in this regard, but it's not good enough, we need more variety in under water creatures, both hostile and otherwise. Also, I really hope that it won't be like Morrowind where it seemed that the moment you set foot into the water, every slaughterfish in the cell would suddenly come after you like sharks in a feeding frenzy. People hate cliffracers, but as far as I'm concerned, the only reason slaughterfish aren't worse is because you can avoid them as long as you don't swim.

The Bloodmoon expansion to MW included Horkers (a walrus-like animal) in the waters around Solstheim.

Abot's Water Life introduced dozens of different types of fish, crabs, shells, whales, squid, and other aquatic species to Morrowind, and turned the waters into someplace worth an occasional visit. You could catch the fish and spear the crabs, and now you can even cook them if you have the latest Necessities of Morrowind version.

BTW We know there'll be fish, with more realistic communities such as the Riften Fishery.

I know everyone is going to kill me for this, hahaha, so I'm ready... (argh) ....

But you know ... if you took the 3D model for the Cliff Racer and put some eyes on the bottom instead, you would have a Sting Ray. So why not have (to preserve the Legacy of Morrowind) and to keep some of the world life along the same vein, why not have Sting Racers? Sting Ray / Cliff Racer merged ? And they could have the same unusual cry that everyone hates (but I personally liked that sound, it's one of the sounds that make me think of Morrowind (my favorite RPG of that era) ... and that sound could be water-modulated (a more gurgling version of the same cry, which already sounded sort of gurgled to begin with) ... and make them glow in the dark, so you can see them even if they are deep underwater.

Bring on the underwater Sting Racers!

I hope it has this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5qho-Qhzcg&feature=related

Thats an engine that you can license for a few hundred bucks. If Skyrim doesn't have it, I will be mad!

As for me I would like to see just random fish swimming around instead of having every fish a hostile one...

I agree with you. the only thing that was ever in the water was slaughterfish, and they were NEVER friendly. It would be nice to see fish swimming around with no intention of killing you.

I think there will be fishes. It was confirmed in the Gamereactor cover story that there will be fishermen. What would they fish... if not fish? :D
I also hope they player will be able to fish.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway... here's my "wishlist" for underwater in general.

1) First add lots of fishes. Normal, friendly, passive fishes. Many different kinds of fish. The player should be able to fish too I think :)

2) Secondly, there should be coral reefs (or something similar more suitable for Skyrim, the point is... the sea floor shouldn't be all "blank"), seaweed, cool underwater rock structures and UNDERWATER CAVERNS! Perhaps even a few sunken ruins... like in Morrowind ;). That was awesome.

3) Add a few hostile fishes and creatures, a few bigger ones (dreugh?) and a few smaller ones (slaughterfish for instance).

4) Add SEA MONSTERS to the deepest depths of water. They should be rare, deadly, big, incredibly strong and terrifying!

Small lakes and that are fine. You should feel pretty safe. BUT THE DEEP WATERS! THOSE YOU SHALL FEAR! :D
Then again, sea monsters should be very rare :)
I can't decide if they should be respawning or not. It leans towards not respawning. Those kinds of creatures are too epic to respawn!

Edit: I think that if sea monsters are non-respawning, then they shouldn't always be on the same place. Perhaps this can be done rather easily by giving them good AI, so you never encounter them on the same spot... and therefore can't prepare yourself as much :)

I agree, the underwater environment always seemed so bland.

I do hope they make attacks underwater extremely difficult though. Swinging a sword through water as easily as above doesn't make much sense.
