Point 'n' Click recommendations

Post » Sun Sep 12, 2010 12:14 am

I've got a hankering for a good ol' fashioned Point 'n' Click adventure game. Preferably a 'serious' one, with a supernatural or msytery (preferably both) theme.

I know there's quite a large number of freeware adventure games out there, but I don't really want to wade through all the crap to find them. The last adventure game (series) I played was the Chzo Mythos series, by Yahtzee. I really enjoyed them, and something similar in style and theme to them would be ideal.

I haven't really played that many adventure games though. I enjoyed Beneath a Steel Sky and the Broken Sword series, but I prefer a more claustraphobic type of game (by claustraphobic I mean more contained in one or a few settings, with more of an emphasise on solving a mystery than progressing through an epic story).

I recently played a gsame on the DS called Hotel Dusk: Room 214 and thought it was excellent.

So, any suggestions? While I'd prefer games that fit the criteria mentioned above, I'm open to anything.

Oh, and I know I said free, but I don't mind paying a small amount for something quality. Also, I don't mind simple graphics. Just look at the Chzo Mythos games. :P

Well there is the Diablo series and Baldur's Gate series. Both are good.

That's not the kind of point 'n' click he's looking for. :P

You mean old point n click games? Then I recommend Monkey Island series. I've heard that they're really good.

They are, but they are far from serious. :D

I'm still planning on getting this one, I've heard very good things about it.

http://www.cafecafegames.com/games/717/exmortis-2.html has been recommended to me by quite a few people. I admit I haven't got round to playing it myself but have been told its excellent. :)

But this is NOT PG13. There's a lot of gore apparantly and it's shock based as I understand it. So you have to know it's going to be quite intense...

This looks quite interesting. I think I'll give the first one a go, but the screens look pretty cool.

WARNING!

Before clicking on Emz's link above, be warned that this game definately isn't PG13! Five seconds in and I've already been subjected to numerous very gory live action images. Also, if you dislike 'shock' horror, avoid.

Nah, I'm made of stern stuff me! (Actually this game is scaring the bejeebus out of me so far, but I'm really enjoying it!)

It's quite interesting, but I can't find any option to save (it's a flash game).

I'm still planning on getting this one, I've heard very good things about it.

The book of secrets is my favorite part! :D It has the voice actor's bloopers and out-takes. Very funny! :teehee:

I'm part way into Syberia 1, but after a savegame corruption (which I eventually fixed by downloading some one else's save game), I sort of lost momentum and stopped playing. Will have to resume it, I hear it is really good, though I've found it to be a tad dull so far.

http://www.studiotrophis.com/site/projects/thewhitechamber. It's a point-and-click adventure game, it's got a themes of supernatural, mystery, and horror, it's serious, it's well-designed, utterly gorgeous, and free.

Neither fits you criteras but http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuyUShtcn94(It's an adventure game but not point n click. Menu based interface) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQ1FpvVZeVA(This is a point n click) is my recommendations. I haven't played much adventure games besides these two, but they are really good.

Yeah if you want a mystery story, can't get much better than Snatcher. Not as much emphasis on inventory or puzzle solving, but it's definitely an amazing visual novel. :goodjob:

+1 on this. Great adventure game. Rather dated now, but the story is excellent. Dreamfall, the sequel, is decent too.

For a decent murder/mystery series, try Post Mortem > Still Life > Still Life 2....not really point-n-click though.

For another great adventure/mystery game, give Indigo Prophecy a shot...again, not really point-n-click.

Technobabylon, a great series still in the making .
The first episode is a tad short but the second one takes about three to fours hours.
