Poker chips as currency

Post » Fri Sep 10, 2010 6:50 pm

Contrary to popular belief, Caps have not always been the favoured currency in the world of Fallout, and I was thinking. What about using poker chips as money in this game? I mean, it's Vegas so it certainly fits the theme. Doesn't really have to be any different from the cap system from Fallout 3, but I think it'd add some flavour to the game.

I know it's a very minor idea, and it's not that important to say the least, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway.

The whole game isn't just based in Vegas, so maybe in Vegas the currency is poker chips and poker chips only (caps won't work) but outside Vegas, caps are the standard currency. Outside vegas, poker chips are pretty much useless.

Well then you have the issue of the currency backed by NCR

They use standard U.S. currency backed by gold don't they?

It would also give us more denominations. I think; aren't chips in different colors and monetary values?
Cool idea.

That sounds cool. If they do that I'll have to start collecting chips plus caps. Boy will my wife love me then ;)

That may be needlessly complicated, but it's a good idea.

I've always thought that the little things make the biggest difference myself. In both Fallout and Oblivion I was always a svcker for the small cosmetic mods, like new book covers or variation in clutter etc. In one of my house mods I literally spent hours placing clutter that had no function besides making it look like someone actually lived in the house (Can be found in my sig if anyone is interested, the house in question is the Springvale Shack) and to capture that wasteland scavenger feel.

Makes sense, now that I think about it. I wouldn't be surprised if chips turned out to be the currency of New Vegas.

Then to get into the spirit of the game, maybe I should start taking bets on what the currency will be :P

I've always thought the smallest things make the biggest difference in games too. For example in Oblivion, I always loved to dungeon dive just to find gold coins because I loved the sound of the metal clanking against each other as you tossed them into your treasure bag. Caps were similar but the hollowness of them didn't have the same effect for me; like I said, the little things. Poker chips are something I can picture and enjoy imagining my character stacking up as he gets wealthier.

We should have caps at least to try to trade in some only to have the merchant say "What the hell am I going to do with bottlecaps?"

Interesting idea. Might be hard to back up with NCR money as well.

Actually, caps were already useless in the West Coast. I doubt anyone would be trading those by the time of New Vegas take place.

I LOVE the idea of poker chips currency! Actually, now I think I will be dissappointed if they do not use poker chips. Shame on you!

Anyway, as someone mentioned, poker chips are of different colors and values. Maybe that could be an interesting feature in the game?

A wonderfully fantastic idea (Im not being sarcastic just in case you think that) i really like the idea and maybe they can make rare chips that are more than others like in actual poker and stuff.

Sounds interesting, though id rather chips were considered items that could be sold for different amounts of caps
(sort of like those special coins you could find in oblivion), since caps are the Fallout currency and have been used in the previous games.
3 forms of currency, one with different levels of worth, would get confusing, and who'd be in charge of the exchange rates anyway?
