Pole-Arms or Crossbows

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:53 am

There seams to be alot of talk about wanting spears and wanting crossbows. Someone posted that it would be good to see which one people would want more so I figured I would post it. We can use this thread to talk about the pros and cons of both weapon types as well as how they could work to make them feel different from other weapons of close type (crossbows and bows)

This can also be used for any other weapon types we are hoping to see.

This is probably going to get locked. There are several other threads regarding crossbows and polearms/spears.

I vote for all of them. But if one or none make it, then oh well, moving on.

Well, to me a spear is not a spear unless you can throw it soooooooooooooooo

But anyway, if I HAD to choose, it would be spears. Just fit the theme of the game better, easier to hunt mammoth with spears than crossbows.

They tend to be pointed at one or the other. I figured I would consolodate them into one.

I would chose throwing weapons, especially javelins.

Spears fit the general setting and give melee fighters a more ranged alternitive

I don't see the point in only being able to choose one. Why only 1?
If Bethesda wants to put both, or one, in the game, they will.
I don't use either on my characters. I'm an Axe man myself.

I guess I'll go ahead and put in my word for this before it gets closed (if it does).

My vote goes to spears. They just seem more practical and seem to fit the theme of Skyrim a lot better than crossbows and throwing weapons. It's not that I wouldn't want those in as well, but since I have to choose one, I choose the more practical option.

My second choice would have to be throwing weapons.

As for crossbows, I really don't see them going in because of the revised archery system put into Skyrim. With changes to how the bow works, and the hard work Bethesda put into making them even better, it would just not be right to be able to trump them easily with a weapon that loads faster, fires faster, and does more damage. It would just render the system useless. Much like how the skeleton key rendered Security to be even more useless in Oblivion.

Spears are absolutely integral to the atmosphere of Skyrim - hunters, guards, they'd just work so well. I'm indifferent towards crossbows as they'd probably subvert the rebalanced nature of ranged combat in the game.

I dont agree on the crossbow part. Even in morrowind it tooks some time to reload the crossbow, Bethesda only needs to make it a little slower and make the bolt hit just as hard as an arrow, pluss that the bolt should do more damage against enemies with heavy armor.

Crossbow with silver bolts would be great for hunting vamps and were-____s, but I'm a spearman.

I'm a Crossbow/Throwing Weapon fan. But really spears should be back in, too. It doesn't make sense to remove weapons from the game. I can understand why, say, flails were removed from Daggerfall to Morrowind and not really returned yet because they're a little difficult to do with a 3D game, but spears are weapons that function similarly to other things in terms of gameplay (plus in Oblivion all weapons were pretty much exactly the same anyway with the only difference between weapon types being the skill that governs them), and Crossbows function similarly to bows in terms of gameplay, and throwing weapons... well, I like them so I'd personally like to see them return but they're the ones that most stand out as functioning different from gameplay. Still, there's no real reason to exclude any of them, apart from Bethesda's lazy narrow mindedness. Being that the number of skills has already been released, and the fact that it's EVEN LOWER than Oblivion's, I doubt we'll be seeing ANY of these in Skyrim (unless gamesas pulls the whole Oblivion thing again and makes Crossbows and Throwing Weapons "Marksman" and makes Spears "Blade" or "Blunt Weapon", not that that would make any sense, but neither did classing axes as "Blunt Weapon").

I need mah poke-stick.

I just feels that the spear would bring more in terms of combat variety than the crossbow (not that I'm claiming they don't offer any on their own).

Yeah, all 3 should be in, but we'd be incredibly lucky just to get one.

Well, my thinking is that I can have pole-arms through the modding community. Heck, the game will have a two-handed and a one-handed skill, so the base for them already exists. This wasn't the case in Oblivion, which made putting them back in a little more difficult. Since there will hopefully be different animations for all those two-handed weapon types, the system is probably more flexible and will allow modders to implement a spear thrust animation, and provide the weapons for it too.

Crossbows might also be easy to mod back in, depends on how archery is set up. Concerning the balancing, well crossbows could have bigger spread, and you'd only get one shot during a battle anyway, because you won't find the time to reload.

Throwing weapons however, they won't be available for a looong time if there isn't a game mechanic that can be used for them, and even then probably only for the player. So my vote goes to throwing weapons. Some of them would fit the setting quite nicely. However I really don't have a problem with the other stuff like darts and throwing stars, they won't be any less fitting than a Khajiit, Argonian or Dunmer in Skyrim.

This is like choosing your favorite son.

The crossbow isn't mine and I'm sure he'll never make it into college, but I pretend to love him anyway. But off the record, he's out.
The spear is reliable and a bit smarter than the throwing weapon and more disciplined, but he's a bit of a wallflower socially.
The throwing weapon is a playboy and will probably date more hot chicks when he hits puberty, but his grades are not living up to his potential since he's a bit of a slacker.

I'd go for the throwing weapon.

It's a tough one but I'm going to have to go with pole-arms, even though I want all of them. I just know I'd use spears more than the others.
