Polearm and Spear discussion thread

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 5:40 am

Let's calmly and thoughtfully discuss the Polearm issue please?

Vote if you want to give your yay or nay. Otherwise lets not get to frumulous about this, shall we?

I'll post a little insight to get us started.

"All right, might I offer some insight, for those of you patient enough to listen?

Lets look at this from a 3D animators point of view, (Me in this case, [yes I actually went to school for this]).
The way the Draugr are holding the poleaxe, it is a shaft, not a haft, indicates a wide grip characteristic of polearms. This means, that in the game they have included the animations for a wide grip, enabling animations for long shafted weapons. Also on the same weapon, you can see the Draugr holding the shaft with two hands together. Same weapon two different animations, this could mean that you can change your grip.

Now, lets look at it from a modders point of view (not really me, but I know how their engine works)
The resource information is (Presumably) written into the game engine, that means the animations needed for a polearm are readily available, meaning you won't need to make a work around to wield a polearm.
So, if they don't include a full myriad of polearms, it would be easy to add them in through modding.

Make sense?"

You should make a single choice poll first. Just wanted to say it early. You can't be indifferent and yes at the same time :P

To be honest, I am indifferent. Spears are just not that exciting a weapon for me, personally, but then again I understand that a lot of people really seem to love them for some reason. If they're in, cool, if not, cool.

Oh, did I make it multiple choice? I'll fix that... Actually I wanted to add a few more question, pole answers first.

Yes. But soon will come all of the people saying, "There's already been a ton of threads on this! Use the search feature!" But, personally, I'm glad to see a thread about spears with the goal of keeping things civilized.

Indifferent. If they're in, that's cool, if not, I won't miss them.

One weapon is not a big deal in the big picture.

I might be, but on the other hand it might just be mostly dead; given a miracle or I kick hard enough, it'll get back up.

Would be cool. But it's not a big deal.
I care a lot about how the game looks, so I'd prefer if Bethesda payed their nice programmers a bit extra to do a bit extra graphics stuff :D

Wasn't the last thread just locked? Shouldn't we give this a rest for maybe more than ten minutes?

To be honest, that's what ruined Oblivion for me, they downsized something that didn't need to be changed, they had it all laid out right, and then they redid it, and it was bad.

The last thread got locked because Arseth was being a little too passionate, that's all. I just wanted to pick up where it left off, albeit, in a sane gentlepersonly manner.

Eh, I don't think you can say Oblivion was bad. It wasn't what you wanted, sure, and it had things that I didn't like, but I enjoyed playing it, it sold a TON, and got tons of awards. That doesn't happen to bad games.

Not necessarily, Oblivion had appeal, in the form of flashy graphics, but it gave little in the way of substance. Dialog was mitigated, skills reduced clothing diminished and gender based. I've said it all before. The game was good, but the change from Morrowind game mechanics to Oblivion was bad. Don't get me wrong, there were improvements, like smart AIs that had routines, but you had to program those. An AI wouldn't find an indoor or outdoor location when they were hungry, wet, or tired, only when they were scared and needed somewhere to run. Which is still bounds better than Morrowinds static AIs that wouldn't move unless in combat. And the character and creature models got a much needed fix from the previous segmented bodies, but at the "Cost" of gameplay.

A lot of people say the same thing about Morrowind when comparing it to Daggerfall. Can't please everyone. Oblivion still offered more than any other game at that time, and for the most part, the same can be said five years later.

I seriously don't see why the mods allow this to continue, this is getting ridiculous. There are FOUR threads on the first and second pages of this forum about Spears.
Use. One. Of. Them.

So this started out as a civilized thread on spears and is now devolving into yet another Oblivion versus Morrowind thread...

I don't think I saw any other game that did spears right, and not just like another weapon with longer reach...
