Poll: removing your mod files from public after time?

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 4:14 pm

Due to busy life, I've been keeping lists of mods I plan on eventually downloading and playing but noticed one I wanted to download was no longer available because the author moved on to other avenues. I got to wondering, maybe I should start grabbing them now instead of later. Thus out of curiousity, how many of you plan on removing your mods from public?

That's unfortunate and fortunately, I don't think that's the norm. I know of a couple of mod authors that would temporarily remove their mods when the flaming on Nexus got too intense, but they would usually open them up again. I'm grateful that SirFrederik actually put an escape clause in his license so that once he left the scene, his mod was open to everybody. That's how I picked up Oblivion XP.

I wish more mod authors would do that.

I can't imagine why anybody would plan to remove mods from the internet. My experience has been that these types of things happen for two reasons: negligence and petulance.

Did a whole ton of Morrowind mods get "removed from the Internet" (yeah, sure!) upon Oblivion's release? Or announcement, or whatever...

Quite.

As Wrye would put it, I'm the http://uesp.net/wiki/User:Wrye/Somewhat_Acerbic_Modders_Dictionary type. People made addons for my mods, so they will not disappear. They must not disappear. I'd feel bad otherwise.

I would say so:

"[T]he Cathedral view might be seen as a guiding ideal for integration efforts (...)"

Hehe.

Some mod makers have recieved quite remarkably hostile responses, up to and including threats of personal violence. I don't think that retracting your mods in those circumstances counts as "petulance"...

By the same token, I doubt anyone releases a mod with the plan of withdrawing it later except in cases like where they release a hotfix or unofficial patch for someone else's mod.

I have no intentions of removing any of mine, although it's certainly likely they'll get much less attention.

I like pie.

I would not remove anything I've uploaded. I'd stop supporting the mods eventually, but I wouldn't remove them.

I don't see why I would remove my mods either. I will eventually stop supporting them, in which my general permission note would apply:
If you ask for permission, and haven't got a reply in 4 weeks, then consider it as permission given.

So if I lose interest and stop answering, but someone else feel like doing something with my mods, they're free to do so.

My mods have been online since 2002, can't see any reason why I should remove them in the future.

That's good that a decent number plan on leaving them up. I know that some good mods were lost because the author left. Along the lines of some of the comments, the reasons being because they couldn't support it and felt it necessary to be unavailable at all as a solution. I understand the reason why, but still think that's a bit excessive.

Anyways, thanks for the great response so far. :D

edit: my grammar stinks today! :banghead:
