Poll: Should there be same-six relationships at start?

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 3:08 am

It's safe to say that if interracial marriages are accepted, gay marriages would be as well.

Even if the Fallout world's civil rights movements were held back at all, by 2077 it's clear that there was full racial and gender equality going on, neither of which gel with the actual 1950s.

Even though I'm pretty sure you copy and pasted that ha, I do agree. The start was a shock and initial horror at first but is not necessarily my main concern, it's what comes after that I'm more worried about. I worry the heterosixual relationship is going to be very significant, the most and/or only significant relationship you can have and the reasons why it has to be exclusively heterosixual are NONE really. Would bother the heck out of me so much that I'm basically ready to cancel my pre-order, which svcks as I've been excited about this game forever.

Can't you just pretend liberals don't exist and you need a "cover" or something? Look I'm not against non-hetero people getting what they want but for [censored] sake, if Bethesda does add it, put a big warning sign around it so I know to stay away. Don't be like Bioware.

It's like when Ubisoft tried to say that they didn't have the resources to animate female characters for Assassin's Creed: Unity. Ten different studios working on a game. Clearly they had nobody to spare...

If we take our own world that hardly seems to be the case.

Is it? Gender equality has some conflicting sources of info going on and I don't think I've seen anything do with racial equality, do you have a source?

Although I do like the idea that just cuz the culture stagnates does not necessarily imply that civil rights also stagnated.

Just RP that you are a closeted homosixual in a marriage to cover the fact yo uhh are gay? Like Rock Hudson back in the 50s and 60s. I mean how long will the tutorial be?

Well, TECHNICALLY, the Lone Wanderer's mother is black. So while we never see her properly in the cutscene, we know your character is either black or mixed pending on what you make your character look like (As James' appearance is determined by your PC's looks).

Edit: And Doctor Li is Asian, so there's that too.

I'm not arguing that, I'm arguing that the only reason there's lots of global discussion about this is because of how it relates to the LGBT community. I don't want to sound disrespectful, because I'm not, but all I'm saying is that the Fallout series has always pre-determined some elements of your character, and that the main reason this particular issue is so hotly discussed is because of its relation to gay and lisbian rights. Which I think is silly. Again, this isn't so much targeted to you as it is to other people I've come across on YouTube and gaming websites.

The problem is the intro on itself and the forced couple.

Don't tell us it wouldn't work when what you propose is a tiny adjustement, while the whole scene is out of place.

Why don't you read the threads related to the issue ?

I don't think you're opposed to the idea. You're just worried about development time, fair enough.

But if we dismiss that "potential" problem we're still left with a story that doesn't NEED archetypes, no reason for it. The story doesn't need a complete overhaul due to the gender of the spouses or the child, honestly at most just voice actors and a bit of writing. There isn't a huge (or any?) major difference between same six parenting and opposite six parenting,

So at the end of it I still don't really think there's THAT much work to be done: a few simple rewordings and different pronouns used. Although for a richer world I'd like some acknowledgement/difference.

But yes hiring voice actors and programming and stuff IS work and money, but I don't think it would take more than a week and a handful of people and wouldn't affect the straight part at all. It's a huge team with a huge budget, they shouldn't leave this for the modders, could be kinda condescending considering how much money they'll make from LGBT gamers expecting to "play as whatever character you want".

I haven't voted because I have nowhere near enough information to know if it would adversely impact on the story further down the line, it might be that the man and woman serve no other purpose than letting the player select their gender, then again it might not.

I'm talking about the pre-nuke world. The postcards, the road signs and magazines, they all have white people mostly with blonde hair in them. The post-nuke world has plenty of racial diversity, species diversity rather.

If there's flying robots in the 50's....................................

Then you can be gay.

It's a video game of your character and it should be allowed.

Period.

Ehhhhh, when you think of campy 1950s media, you think of the Rockwellian American family pictures, which were usually, if not always, presented as happy white families. So it's more an intentional thing by Bethesda to perpetuate that campy image we always associate with the 'idealised America' of the 1950s. There's obviously still blacks, Asians, Hispanics and so on in the country, but the only real racism we see officially is the Chinese of America being treated similar to the Japanese-Americans during World War 2.

I don't think anyone really expects Bethesda to rewrite the story at this point, Martyr. Same as we didn't expect them to redesign Skyrim years after its release, but we still discussed what could and in our opinion should have been. Maybe they'll take note and consider it in the next game. Maybe not.

It's difficult to judge before we play the game, but I can't think of any way a straight marriage could be necessary for the story and impossible to replace with a gay marriage/relationship. The emotional connection would still be there, the child can too. The only argument against it is it being a reimagined future from the 50's, but it isn't actually the 50's, it's 2077 and some other things have changed, so I don't see why this one couldn't. And frankly, I don't care. I don't strive for 100% historical accuracy in fictionalized futuristic settings. Bethesda can preserve their Fallout society image everywhere else if they want, character creation doesn't define the atmosphere of the entire game.

I did laugh at an earlier thread that had the claim that if you had a wife and child that you couldn't be gay, you can argue that the main character is simply comforming to the norm of their society as many did in the real 50s (even if its really 2077), I think its quite easy to produce a gay or lisbian character simply by remember our own history. Also you could treat the marriage as a Bill and Ted....no wait Will and Grace thing, best friends but add in raising a child.

I'd have no problem with the choice to make the couple gay or lisbian, but the point of the husband and wife choice is to give you the choice of playing a male or female character and I assume to produce a child that will be important to the story somehow.

Out of curiosity. Could you gay-marry in Skyrim?

Well then, since Bethesda was ok with gay relationships in skyrim I don't see why they'd change their perspective for fallout 4.

I think I get what you're saying, I'm not striving for perfect political correctness in everything or to change everyone's mind. I also feel my vocabulary is limited and it's difficult to argue about these things without sounding like some sort of Social Justice theory/overly righteous robot. I, for my own reasons genuinely do not want my character to be forced to be straight throughout the entirety of the main quest or other aspects of the game. My enjoyment of RPGs is largely due to my escapism in them and that I can inhabit the world as a character very similar to me. Although I have acted as different characters in the past for theatre and greatly enjoyed acting, what I want and expect out of Fallout is the option to at least be gay or at the very least asixual. I want to play the game without even thinking of what my character would do and just what I would do under the circumstances.
