Popularity of hardcoe Mode

Post » Sun May 23, 2010 9:20 pm

Now that everyone has had plenty of time to experiment with hardcoe mode and various mods, I'm interested to know how popular it is.

Do you think BethesdaObsidian deserves some praise for including this feature as an option?

Personally, after playing this way, I could not go back to "non-hardcoe" mode, and I prefer using the mods Harder hardcoe Rates (Refined Rates) and Expensive Wasteland. I have also just downloaded Arwen's Tweaks, looking forward to trying this.

I beat FONV on normal mode and thought it was a great game, I then replayed on hardcoe mode and thought it was an excellent game.

No, its not the least bit harder except for eating and sleeping being so annoying.

Doesn't make combat harder so I don't care for it/don't use it myself, but I think the fact the game has the option for people who like what it does is +1.

it's a nice addition, but it's not really hard, just tedious. ED-E carries spare weapons (Jury Rigging) and weapon repair kits (CZ57, Holorifle, etc.) for me, but he has a lot of spare space. It could carry some food, water, and ammo if I wanted. Companions as pack mules make Harcore really trivial (I did do one run for the trophy).

I like it, but I only use it if I'm roleplaying. It adds another layer of strategy to the game, which I like, but managing my thirst can get a little tedious.

I put it on and left it on. I do kind of like the sleeping/eating/drinking thing, it adds to the atmosphere. Honestly though I don't care about it, like I said I turned it on and left it on and forgot about it.

i didn't really like it, some things were cool like ammo having weight and getting health over time from stimpacs. Eating drinking and sleeping was kinda lame tho. So i don't use it

I like it. The games are always saying about how it's hard to survive out in the wastes without fresh water and well, being a console user I never got to use the mods to make that an actual concern. As long as you sleep regularly, drink from water sources, and eat a Gecko steak every morning it's not even that tedious. I forget about those stats half the time because of that little routine. And I enjoy the fact that my character can die from something other than a shot to the face if I just run around all willy nilly day after day.

And ammo weight, if just never seemed right carrying around thousands upon thousands of rounds for like 80 different guns.

But I mostly love it because of the cripple effects. In FO3 I would refuse to stimpak if I got crippled because well, I liked having to hobble around the wastelands for my errors in judgment. It made me a little more cautious and take the game a bit more seriously, which I know it's not everyone's cup of tea but I like it. I'll still try and not even use a doctor's bag unless I can at least have my character sitting down or something hahaha. And usually even then I'll just use it generally so everything just gets healed a little bit and becomes more prone to breaking unless I consult a physician.

So I for one LOVE hardcoe mode, and can't play without it anymore.

Did my first playthrough on hardcoe ( and mainly very hard) but I enjoy my furthur playthroughs to be on casual.
The only thing I like on hardcoe is the stimpacks healing over time and not instantly fixing broken limbs. However the eat, sleep, drink feature was too mundane and repetitive so thats why I stick to casual now.

LOL you are absolutely right!

I found the vanilla version to be not challenging enough - water and food are very plentiful and you only need to sleep about once per week.

After installing Harder hardcoe Rates (Refined Rates) and Expensive Wasteland (x5 version), I found that it actually became challenging for me and I had a reason to get excited about finding food or drink items. I died frequently from dehydration and spent most of the game suffering from reduced stats as a result of starvation, hunger or sleep deprivation, usually hobbling around with all of my limbs crippled. For me that was a lot of fun.

It's not quite as repetitive when you don't have any water or food to constantly consume and you end up walking around suffering the negative effects instead of just eating/drinking constantly.

AFAIK it's nearly impossible to make an effective energy weapon build on hardcoe, the ammo weighs a ton. MFC is like 0.8 units of weight.

What kind of changes would you have liked to see in hardcoe mode?

No.
(Not anymore praise than Nintendo deserves for including mushrooms in Mario. ; HC should have just been the the base game ~along with WW... Regular play, no option at all.)

(Strictly speaking though... I'm forgetting the food & dehydration aspect ~those I could lose or have optional; but I don't believe in option for option sake... Choosing them should affect the game and the XP given game wide).

hardcoe mode should be the only mode in fo. Anything that makes the game harder, or adds realism is a welcome edition.

I always played "hardcoe" (massive sarcasm quotes) mode on. Then i applied mods to remove the massive sarcasm quotes off from it :hehe:

Casting a vote for "No."

*More* micro-management of my inventory? No. Thank you.

In addition to many other things I dislike about hardcoe mode (including the need to drink water at what seems like a rate of every 3 minutes), it is the weight of ammo that kills my desire of the mode.

I'll put it this way, if some sort of "hardcoe" mode wasn't a part of NV vanilla, I'd just download a mod that probably does it better anyway. However, I'd be pretty disappointed in Obsidian for sticking to the whole "Run and Gun" aspect rather then catering to those that like to roleplay a bit as well.

 Its the series... Every Fallout had it prior to FO3. I wish it had been part of the base gameplay myself.

(But optional is fine, and suits twice as many.)
