port item from oblivion mod to FO3 mod?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 2:02 pm

how would i go about porting this:http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7549 to fallout 3 to make a mod for myself and possibly later on release it to you guys. i need a break from my current mod because its getting a bit.. how can i say it without breaking the rules... hmm.. i dont think i can..

either way, i need a mod to keep me busy but not on the same one. and so i thought why not make a stargate mod! and then i found out that the only SG is for oblivion. so now i need to know if i am allowed to port the gate from oblivion to FO3 for later release to you guys.

the rest i can handle

thanks

From the Readme for that mod...

If you want to create a Mod,
feel free, as long you include
this readthisgate.txt and as long you
give me credit for my work.

However, I would also check with Sahardoom and verify that it was 100% created from scratch.

Any meshes or textures from Oblivion, even if modified, will mean you cannot use it for FO3.

If you use any resources from Oblivion in a Fallout3 mod, it can only be for personal use. You can't release it.

You don't, you're going to have to do it from scratch. That mod will no doubt have a mesh for the gate and Oblivion and FO3 use different mesh formats. You can't simply port one mod over to the other game without a substantial alteration of the resources. Textures are the same for both, but not meshes.

so could i not copy the mesh and put it into nif? or would that not work?

You don't put a mesh into a nif, nifs are the meshes. That's just a file extension used. And no, you can't simply port it over since the formats for the two game are slightly different, enough so that they aren't compatible.

I can't view the mod assets you wish to convert. as mentioned no assets from other games can be used... if the meshes are not from or use parts of vanilla oblivion assets. then conversion is allowed.

you wouldn't have to start from scratch. basically- a simple import ob nif into blender/max. set up scene for export. export as f3 ver nif.
I can even coax animations between versions. mostly only useful for animated statics and stuff. anything with skeletons and full anim sets is a different kettle of fish.

You don't put a mesh into a nif, nifs are the meshes.

nifs are much more than simple mesh geometry... I can think of it like putting a mesh into a nif. just semantics.

Nifs include the mesh data, but are not simply meshes themselves. They are more like a resource file with instructions for how to interpret and display the embedded mesh, and where its textures are stored (Textures are not in the Nif).
