Portal 2 Discussion

Agreed. I also felt like there was a slight lack of continuity between the games - the different textures and puzzle elements and stuff.

About the timeframe:
Spoiler
This can be interpreted in two ways. When you awake for the second time the automated message says 9 several times. That's either just the machine stuttering, which means you've slept for 9 days, which is unlikely, your room wouldn't change that much in 9 days. It could also be 9 years, but as the message measured time in days earlier that's also unlikely. The third option, the one I think fits the most all thing considered, is that Chell has been in suspension for well over 200 years...a lot can change in two centuries.

Plus, as mentioned before, the tests with Cave Johnson speaking were all discontinued years ago, relics of the past.

Also, JK Simmons was amazing in this game, the man could read the phone book and make it brilliant, but in this game he really outdid himself without us ever seeing him in anything but paintings. Brilliant casting.

9999 days appears to equal around 27 years.

Or to be more precise, 9999 devided by 365 equals 27.39452. Not accounting for leap-years of course.

It's 5 9s, not 4. Taking it literally it's about 270 years, taking it as having hit the upper limit for how many years it can record means it could be anything from about 270 years onwards.

Add one more nine and it goes up to 2739 years, and I doubt it's been that long. I also doubt it's been nearly 300 years as there is still plenty of paper, wood and whatnot around. After 273 years you'd think that stuff would be nearly gone.

And don't forget, of course, that we're talking about aperture science, the company who has planned ahead for the world being run by a beast king, or for the laws of physics breaking - making long lasting paper and wood hardly seems unrealistic for them.

Well I was implying that if you were to add one more 9 after the five you mentioned. Four 9s equals roughly 27 years, five 9s equals roughly 273 years, six 9s equals 2739 years, etc..

Personally I'm more a fan of the 27 years idea, as it puts it at just around the time of Half-Life 2.

That's nice, but there are 5 9s at the start, not 4, so there's really nowhere for the 27 year mark to come from.

I hope the next Half Life game wont have some sort of co-op, one player as Gordon, one as Alyx. :shakehead:

Why would that be bad? They can just make a normal SP campaign with a voiced Alyx (and her going off now and then, while the main character gets more weapons or such), while the co-op campaign has one player as Gordon and another playing Alyx. Should not make such a big difference.

Like you said, it could be looping. If I recall, VAVLe stated that Portal 2 was happening 800 years after the first, but I just don't see how it looks like it's even been 200 years.

Wait, what? The only official statement I know stated that it's been "about 200 years". That is quite enough for that much vegetation to grow, for well preserved metal structures to start falling apart, and such.
We shouldn't really read too much into a simple joke. ^_^

If I remember correctly (and I'm not saying I do, mind you), VALVe originally stated, back when the first information was being released, that it was set some 800 years in the future. Now obviously that isn't the case, but I still have a hard time imagining that all that still could still be there in 273 years. Especially all the wood and stuff that's in the lower parts of the enrichment center.

Anyway, I should probably get some sleep as I may not be thinking entirely straight right now. -_-

Valve really enjoys [censored] with our minds... does anyone else still have nightmares after the interview where they said that G-Man was Gordon Freeman from the future?

This is a game where a hyperintelligent AI construct can run off of a potato battery, in an organization that had automated responses in the event of the downfall of human civilization and the arrival of another - they plan long term!

Also, it's not like our own world could preserve stuff so well in an hermetically sealed vault.

I can but I'll have to make a new account with this name. And I don't have a headset so I can't talk :/

Awesome, and it's alright, I dont have one either. At $50 I'd rather just remain silent.

Finally beat the single player(been putting it off for a while). While it was a bit too short for my liking, and the challenge consisted of me missing obvious things rather than not thinking correctly, I really enjoyed it. It's a case of quality>quantity.

I still want to know why they bloody hired people experienced in sign language. Hopefully for HL3/Ep3, whatever it's going to be called.

You don't either? This is going to be interesting then...

I beat the single-player and it's one of the best I've ever played. Perfect in my book. I just wish it didn't have to end. I would be glad to test with GlaDOS for the rest of my life. And in my opinion, this is quite possibly the best ending in any game I've played. Yeah... I said it.

Half-Life 3: Episode 3

is the correct title

and while we are on the subject of correct titles... there is no Half-Life 2 Episode 1 / 2, here is how it really is:

Half-Life
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 3: Episode 1
Half-Life 3: Episode 2
Half-Life 3: Episode 3
