Portal 2 Discussion

Agreed. I also felt like there was a slight lack of continuity between the games - the different textures and puzzle elements and stuff.

Spoiler
It has been a ridiculously long time since the first game. Also, you "discover" the old testing facility, so that stuff was discontinued, which would explain why it wasn't in the first game.

Portal 2 is magnificent. The story is great and Valve didn't disappoint me. There's this test chamber I'm stuck in- IT MAKES ME BURST INTO TEARS. But anyways, let's focus on positive things. My favorite line was "Let's give your birth parents a call. *ring* 'Sorry, but the birth parents you are trying to reach don't love you. Hang up',"

I'll pick this up either sometime this weekend or next weekend. Gamertag is Lv97 Magikarp if anyone wants to play co-op when I get it.

There has to be some kind of story behind that tag. :P

Sure it's been a long time, but I can't see GLaDOS going to the effort of redesigning all the wall panel colours and introducing the movable chambers and stuff, unless everything from the first game was in a different, older wing. I think I prefer the cleaner look of the new game, and the rail system and stuff, it just doesn't seem to tie in very well with the dirty back corridors of the first game.

I used to play a lot of TF2 (and still do), So I wanted something silly to come up when I dominated people. It was originally going to be Lvl 99 Magikarp, but that was taken. Anyways, I'm happy with it, and now when I dominate people it says "Lv97 Magikarp IS DOMINATING [gamertag]"

THAT'S MY STORY, AND I'M STICKING TO IT.

Exact same thing that happened to me.

I just went through and got some achievements...just cause I can. I listened to a bunch more dialogue that is very situation-oriented.

Spoiler
Like what Watson says for the "You Made Your Point" achievement.

I also played through with some developer commentary on. What they did for the opening sequence is craaaazy.

I'm noticing this too. Portal 2's rooms seem to be in cubes in a giant empty room, not counting the old facility. Portal 1 definitely wasn't like that.

Well, 5 and half hours. Only a couple good puzzles which were all towards the end. No advanced chambers to do. I really shouldn't have spent $50 on this.

I really enjoyed the game, I just finished it about 10 minutes ago. I spent about 7 hours in single player. Overall very fun.

Just beat it. Quite an odd ending, to say the least. However, it all makes sense and the puzzle peices come together if you paid attention to the dialog.

So I had to go without internet for a day as I waited for my new wireless adapter to arrive, and in that time I finished the single player in offline mode. Not entirely sure how long it took but I know it was longer than 4 hours. It was a pretty great game, and one of the few that made me laugh with it and not at it. The only problem I have with it is that there were multiple instances where I felt like certain chambers were just filler. I never really felt that way in the first Portal, but I guess that was because the player didn't know there was anything more to do than tests. Still, as a whole it was really enjoyable and definitely one of the more memorable gaming experiences I've had.

Spoiler

I was really hoping the ending would hint at the next Half Life though. It seems like such a missed opportunity. I was disappointed when we saw the Earth and it looked perfectly normal, and when we surfaced to find a field of wheat instead of something a bit more post apocalyptic. Oh well. And at the very least I would have liked to hear just how long we were in cryostatis...

Why would it be post apocalyptic?

Portal and Half-Life take place in the same universe, it's assumed that the 7 hour war would have happened by the events of Portal 2

Spoiler
HL2 seemed pretty post-apocalyptic to me - the world occupied by aliens and monsters, most of humanity probably wiped out, destroyed cities and stuff. The fact that there's no one around in Portal implies that they were probably killed when the combine arrived as well.

Spoiler
What I was trying to get at was that I was under the impression that Portal 2 would be far enough in the future that the actions of the Combine, such as starting to drain the oceans, would have been noticeable. I wasn't expecting to emerge in a field of wheat considering we're in the Half Life universe.

Spoiler
If the counter when you wake up is to be believed it's been at least 200 years since Portal. Five 9's, iirc. I'd say the 7 hour war, and Gordon Freeman for that matter, would be material for the history books. If anything it's post post-apocalyptic. How the creaky shed survived all that time is anyone's guess :P

My 800 ms ping doesn't like me... and I has no friends.

Saw this on the Steam forums, thought it was cool:
Spoiler
CAVE
GLaDOS, I am your father!

GLADOS
That's not true! That's impossible!

CAVE
And my secretary, Caroline, is you!

GLADOS
That's not true! That's improbable!

CAVE
And our illegitimate child conceived while I was incredibly old and sick and then lost in the system and made to become a common lab rat who will someday escape and destroy you is... Chell!!

GLADOS
That's... very unlikely.

- - - - - - - - - - - what's next? - - - - - - - - - - -

CAVE
And, when I was a child, I built Wheatley. And the portal gun? Well that's just prototype alien technology stolen from some race called the Combine who might one day come to Earth angrily searching for it...

GLADOS
Look, if you're not gonna take this seriously, I'm out.

I finished Portal 2 today. Such a great game. PSN is down so no co-op for today. I started a new game though and got a few achievements I didn't get on my first run.
