A lot of people seem to be unhappy with Portal 2, at least on the Steam forums and metacritic. I was torn if I wanted to spend $50 on it at the moment, i think I am just going to wait till it goes on sale. I was worried that it wasn't going to have that much actual content, and from what I've been reading it seems like it doesn't. I'm also disappointed in Valve that they included the "botconomy" in this game.

I'm confused... the game has 95/100 on metacritic and there is waaaayy more content than there was in the first game. The singleplayer campaign is longer than the one in Portal 1 and then you've got the coop campaign after that.

Rule 1 about buying a Steam game: Never go on their forums looking for a positive opinion about a game.

I don't mean that as forum bashing or anything. I go there quite often for a lot of positive things, it's just...never go to the developer's forums for an accurate opinion about the game because it's filled with people who have blown their expectations so far out of the water that nothing will please them.

Look at the user reviews on metacritic. There is a pretty large disparity between professional reviewers and normal users. As far as campaign length yes, Portal 2 is a lot longer than Portal 1. But the first portal was also part of the orange box and the individual game was sold for a much lower price. I think Portal 2's total gameplay comes out to about 15 hours, and from what I understand that is pretty generous estimate. The problem for me is that that isn't a whole lot for a $50 game, and it doesn't have much replayability after you beat both campaigns.

Well have you read the user reviews on Metacritic? Almost all of them give the game 0 because of the dlc and because the campaign is 4 hours long (which is a lie). Is it fair to give the game 0 / 10 because of those reasons? definitely not.

15 hours is rather long for a new game these days actually.

also you should read this post on RPG -> http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/19/lets-address-some-portal-2-nonsense/

I also think that Portal 2 has a great replay value. I spent all day at my friends house playing it (I don't have it, yet) and after finishing the singleplayer, which took about 6 hours, I started the game again and tried to do it faster. The game is perfect for speed runs and challenges.

Thanks for that link. I can't believe people are saying it's 4 hours long. I played for 4 hours last night and I have no idea how much longer I have left in the story mode. I'm sure another 4-5 hours easily seeing as where I am right now and the events that have happened.

Yeah it's a good post, the comments are pretty awesome too :P

"I’ve noticed a lot lately that you only ever seem to get scores of 10 or 0 on User reviews on Metacritic . I use to quite enjoy reading some of the user comments on metacritic, but it seems to be populated by the same people who write comments on youtube"

Kotaku had a post similar to the RPG one. I don't really see me starting the game over and trying to do it faster. There are also a number of other games that I would rather spend the $50 on. Also I don't know the 15 hours total gametime as a fact, it was just the most playtime that I could recall. Overall I'd still much rather wait to see what they add in terms of content and to see what sales they offer with it.

I'm pretty sure they'll add more content to the game. I don't know if it'll be free (like in L4D2) or if they'll use micro-transactions (like TF2 and the hats) but they'll definitely add more stuff.

I assume they will add more content as Valve usually does. However, I'm not really interested in another hat simulator if that's what they're adding.

I like what they're doing with L4D2, they are frequently adding new game modes and maps. They are even going to port all of the L4D1 maps to L4D2 for free :)

I think we can expect more user-created content in the Portal 2 cosmetics shop since they are already doing it in TF2, which I think is great by the way, the modders get a very generous cut of the sales and it helps people to get into game development.

I've never been a fan of microtransactions. While only aesthetic items are definitely the lesser of two evils I still don't like selling in game items for real currency. While it's cool that some modders got paychecks from Valve in the $30k range it pains me that people actually bought hats for $10-$20.

I agree with you but I've always thought that microtransactions are fine as long as they only sell cosmetic items and nothing that can affect gameplay.

To me micro transactions aren't so much "fine" as "ignorable". Given I'm not deciding to not purchase portal because of the "botconomy" it certainly doesn't help its case. Also it disappoints me that Valve has taken this direction of nickel and dimming. Although in their defense if I were making games and I saw how much people paid for TF2 items and saw that opportunity again, I would jump on it. With any luck the game will go 50% off during the summer sale this year.

See, I don't consider it nickle and diming because it's totally optional and doesn't affect the gameplay at all. It's not like you can buy a portal gun that can shoot portals wherever you want or increase your running speed or whatever. It'd be like if CoD made it so that you could unlock the gold camouflage (which takes being the highest prestige) whenever for $4 and it applied to all your weapons.

Now that I write that, though, I think it'd be cool if Valve made it so that if you did certain challenges or reached certain milestones, you could unlock the skins for your robot. That way you get the option of trying to complete the challenge for it or just buying it.

Cash is always the easy way out.

I had to miss out on the midnight release because I was doing homework instead but I'll be picking it up in about 2 hours. Then I'll likely be able to install it and play a level or two and then go to my next class and then come home a few hours later and play some more... while also trying to do homework... while also trying to finish up the Minecraft thread shared map. :bonk:

Regarding the length of the game, I honestly don't care how long it is, and Portal is one of the few series I can say that about. The first Portal took me a single night to complete but it's still in my top ten favorite games.

Oh, and if I'm not around when this thread reaches the post limit, feel free to make a new thread in my absence.

Hey guys that got the golden potatoes, apparently if you restart steam, any duplicates you had from the valve complete pack will now show up as giftable. Rejoice friends of potato lovers.

Portal is one sitting game for me, good to hear they've lengthened the sequel. Hopefully they'll have the advanced chambers in it too, or add them later.

So... Gamgee... Forgive me ?

Also, beat the game. Yes. YES. YEEEEEESSSSSSSS- on to co-op.

And about the store, I'd like to point out: I've found two of the items available in the store. That means I got them for free. Just like with TF2. I knew VALVe wasn't that heartless.

No. Absolutely not. If you must squee/discuss with others who have finished it, use spoiler tags. It's what they're there for.

I wasn't planning on getting this game until it was cheaper but I somehow managed to score myself a copy today. Now I get to spend the next 8 hours watching the download meter. 9%.....
