Is it possibble we have already seen Skyrim' s Aurora Boreal

Post » Thu Apr 21, 2011 3:56 am

Ive been seeing quite a few posts about people wanting Skyrims own version of the Aurora Borealis and im pretty sure its already in the game just no one has noticed

In the picture of the skills there is a sky in the background with all of the stars
http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2011/02/The-Elder-Scrolls-V-Skyrim-Magic-Skill-Tree.jpg

You see the stars that relate to each skill and with that you see a mystic blue aura

Im pretty sure that thats the aurora borealis of skyrim

and to me it looks pretty epic

I just wanted to bring that to everyones attention :)

yeah sure does, surely it wouldn't make sense given the lore though? I mean nebulas are definitely a thing of our universe, related to stars and dust and hydrogen and whatnot.

It's a nebula. It's been mentioned that that's just what the skill menu background looks like, and isn't the actual in-game night sky.

Wait, but hasnt whatever you choose been confirmed to be in the night sky (IE whatever skills you choose will light up a certain star in perse the mage, or the warrior, etc..), so couldnt this possibly be part of the night sky?

That's not he actual sky. That is just the menu. It has already been confirmed that your choices only affect the menu sky, not the actual sky. Your not going to see nebulae or lines connecting stars in the actual sky. Also, that's just the glow from the nebula.

However, I'm sure that Bethesda will have an Aurora Borealis. I mean, they make sure to add in Masser and Secunda and even the Shade of the Revenant in the sky, I think an Aurora Borealis is well within their thoughts to do for the sky.

That's not aurora borealis. That's a nebula containing a constellation.

But the menu is supposed to be like the sky, meaning this is what it will probably look like at a basic level.

I also read that when we go to the menu's etc we can look into the sky. You'll look in different directions that it will probably zoom in that direction. So say you look up,you'll see the sky, then zoom farther to view past the normal sky and into space/the nebula. The same with looking down i imagine, you'll see the map from a certain height, and see allsorts, then zoom farther to plan routes etc. That's how i understand it,but we'll see. It will basically be more 3D ,like the objects in the game we look at. That's just my view on it.

Not 100% sure, could have been the GI article,or the magazine coverage,it was one of those. Checkout all the info on the GI website,or bethesda website.

*Edit* How i explained it in my previous post was my take on it,and may not be 100% accurate. It was just my understanding of it,from what i've read/heard.

*Skyrims user inteface* On the GI website.

It's really a modern tip of the hat to the Daggerfall 'questionnaire' class choosing system. It showed a cottage, I believe, with the open night sky during that quiz, and what choice you made, A, B or C, would brighten one of the 3 archetype Constellations accordingly. The menu they describe appears to be simply a much more current variation on that.... not the in-game night sky itself.

We already got a post (either on these forums or in a tweet, I can't remember which. Pretty sure it was on the forums) that cleared this argument up a long time ago, shortly after the GI mag. The menu is nothing like the sky. "The Sky" they talked about in the GI mag was the menu "sky", not the actual sky. The mix up from the odd wording of that in the article really confused many people and we ended up getting a dev to clear it up. Alot of people were thinking that you would look up and you would see a giant nebula in the sky also hehe.

I invoke Marlowe's law.
It is beautiful and therefore true.

(and any physical minded floop that wants to interject really should have a two year course on literature first, or make otherwise intelligeble remarks, as Im fed up.)

Yeah, and the other "classes" will have similar depictions.

Huh? The Nebulae were beautiful and therefore they exist? I'm confused lol.

I'm feeling mighty stupid around now for obsessing over the weird horizontal list without noticing that picture of a wizard in it.

First off - Obvious wizard is obvious. The reason it's the Mage is because the screen is over the magic skills section of the skills menu.......the combat section will be the Warrior, and the stealth section will be the Thief.

Also, look at the top right of the screen. THAT is an aurora diffraction pattern, and some smaller aurora-like streaks are within the "mage nebula" as well. http://www.awesomeoff.com/images/entries/mainview/Aurora_Borealis2.jpg and a http://www.wolaver.org/Space/pelican.jpg and this one kinda looks like a warrior with his fist up - http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0504/heic0506b_hst_big.jpg. I'm pretty sure they just made the menu a blend of a cool nebula with a constellation, and some awesome radiation aurora-like effects. It will be amazing, I'm sure.

Does that confirm/deny actual auroras in the night sky? No. Is there evidence that auroras are recognized in TES? Yes. For instance, the Ayleid warriors were called Aurorans. I know that's random, but just saying, the word is already being applied in some way.

Youre half right good sir. The skills and perks that you select will cause stars to light up in the menu. I'm sure you're right about the connecting lines not being visible, but the stars are confirmed to light up in-game as well as in the menu.
