It would be awesome to have a dog companion - but only if it's essential, as in can only be knocked unconcious. Otherwise I'll just underuse him out of fear of losing a unique companion forever.

Weren't there also NPC's with pets in Oblivion? And Fallout? While it'd be cool, everything you see an NPC do is not an indication that we are able to do it.

not really interested in dog pets to be honest, already had a dog in fallout 3 and new vegas... also what if you are a khajiit, I am fairly sure Khajiit wouldn't like dogs now... also there was kinda that skinned hound in shivering isles that died within a few minutes of getting it (that is to say it'd die within a few minutes). It's possible that they might have a dog companion, however I doubt it's actually that likely in this case.

Instead of a dog, I'd want a.. a troll to follow me around.
Trollin'.
Maybe even I could order him to go under a bridge and charge a toll and get an income. Hell yes.

Realistically:
Possible, but don't count on a dog companion.

Yea, I mean I never understood why if an NPC could do something, the player couldn't. Obviously they have a script where a dog is not hostile to the NPC but hostile to people who are within range. All they would need is a way to make that script attached to the PC. In game terms, the easiest way for me to see that would be just to have stray dogs in the city, and if you place meat in front of one he may/may not start to follow you.

Yes, there were NPCs with pets. But in the case of Fallout, you actually could have a dog companion.

I loved Rex and Dogmeat.
Especially when Timmy was trapped in the well.

Dog companion is the most cliche companion ever and I really don't want to see it in TES, especially considering the number of completely unique monsters walking around Tamriel that would make much more interesting pets.

Yes, but it was a robot dog, right? Anyway, I wouldn't really consider it a pet if it took up a companion slot.

Well...they are the most loyal and obedient animals, so there's no surprise that they'd be the first choice as an animal companion.

You could have a 'dog' in Oblivion... You could get one of those skinless hounds in the Shivering Isles.

Not saying it isn't justified that they're so popular, but it's Tamriel. Give me a guar or something instead. A dog is boring and cliche.

True. I would like a polar bear. or saber toothed tiger. with a mammoth mount.

I don't know about dogs, I did like Rex and Dogmeat. But I've always wanted a pet Baliwog, or a walking Slaughter fish.

As lame as it may sound, I actually wouldn't mind a dog that stayed at the players house as opposed to one that followed you everywhere you go. Having a mutt alongside you while fighting fire-breathing dragons isn't the best idea.

Dragon vs. Spot :: Just a sad situation waiting to happen.
