Possible future mod - Tundra retexture

Post » Mon Aug 01, 2011 10:50 am

I'm not sure how most people feel about it, but I'm not a huge fan of the... (coral?) colour of the tundra, I think it looks kind of ugly. So I think I might try and recolour it to look more like the concept art. http://dd-innovations.nl/donny/wp-content/gallery/concept-art/WhiterunCityTundra.jpg

So I did a quick photoshop to see what it would look like, and I'm wondering what you think about it. Which way do you think is better? The recolour or the original?

Bought!

After I saw the tundra concept art, I expected something more lush, green, and wet. I like your version much better.

There are going to be areas of lush woods and underbrush, but it won't be that prevalent. At least that's what I remember reading somewhere. Take a look at a map and you'll see the areas of Skyrim that will probably be more lush compared to some of the others.

I do understand what you're saying though. If I had a choice between the two versions I would agree with yours. One of the biggest drawbacks to fallout (imo) was the lack of color in the world.

It's a Tundra. It isn't supposed to be lush and green...

I think all it really needs is patches of snow lying around here and there. It doesn't really look like a tundra to me.

1) Tundra can be lush and green (both arctic and alpine, not sure which this is supposed to be), I spent a while looking it up before
2) If not, why did they design it to be so in the concept art
3) As you can see by the amount of trees (more visible in the demo, there's loads of them) this is not a proper tundra anyway
4) You don't have to like it, but don't claim that my version is "wrong" or anything, thankyou.

There is a problem here.

Either you are going to keep the color of grasses, and they would be brown over the green ground, or you are going to change them to green as well, which they become green at all positions, around the world, probably conflicting with the theme of some other else.

So you have to create a new type of grass and replace all the grass over there, as well.

Two things. As mentioned, it's tundra. Tundra isn't known for being lush and it's typically not all that green either.

Second, that's not coral. That's varying shades of brown, beige, green, and gray...

Coral is a pinkish orange color. Look up the Tuscarora craqe myrtle if you want a good representation.

I might be mistaken, but I think Bethesda tends to make seperate textures and grasses for every area, even if they are very similar. I noticed this going through the construction set in Oblivion, a few highly similar textures, but with different names based on where they are used. I guess we'll see when the game is released anyway how plausible this is.

Hey that concept art looks like Edoras from LOTR. Anyway I also think not every area will have this type of tundra. Personally I do like yours better, but heck some tundra is brown, especially where I live!

I think the Tundra Marsh will be lush green and mossy. What we saw in the G4 demo is just a regular Tundra.

I saw a picture of what I think is tundra marsh. Grass wasn't green but it looked pretty awesome. I'd link it to you but I can't because it's a scan, a scan from PSM magazine, september issue, I think.

Anyway, it's all misty and mysterious looking.

Tundra comes in many flavors:

http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/exhibits/biomes/tundra.php
http://www.bio.miami.edu/dana/dox/tundra.html

We've only seen a couple of screenshots. Maybe the game will contain some variety. If not, modders could do a Unique Landscapes compilation with different tundras in different region. The red autumn tundra would go nicely with the autumn aspen forests, for example. I do like the concept art for Whitrun, and tundra does look like that during its short growing season.

The Bethesda version looks more like sheet heather than tundra:

True, tundra can come in a variety of forms, I'm not convinced it will come in seperate forms within a certain region (However I'm sure volcanic tundra and tundra marsh will be noticeably different from "tundra") save perhaps a tiny amount of variation simply due to the size of the map (only the size of Oblivion, you can see most of the tundra on the screen at any one time, it would be weird having too much variation). Also, I'd like this part redone anyway because, being around a major city (Whiterun) it's an area I'll see a lot.

I like them both, but the original fit's better with my vision of a tundra.

EDIT: Oh heck, why am I lying. I like yours better.

It matches the concept art better.

This would be easy to mod since all it is doing is color balance. No need to create new textures.

I'd definitely use that mod. And I hope there are mods to make the tundra more geographically interesting too.. in the gameplay video (where the giants are walking) it looked very depressing. Just a boring, flat, brown plain. I don't how exactly to spruce it up other than changing the color, but I hope it gets done.

And on the same note I hope there are mods that make lush forests cover more of the map. Like someone else said, apparently the green forests (http://media.pcgamer.com/files/2011/02/Skryim-Trailer-anolysis-4-Forest-Statue-Head.jpg) will only be a small part of the world. But those kinds of forests are far and away my favorite part of Elder Scrolls games. They feel the most "fantasy" in my opinion. The other forest they showed, the "autumn" themed one, looked depressing with all the dead trees and sepia color tone.

I prefer the original, but I like what you've done! Before any screens of the tundra were released, I was hopping it had a reddish tinge to it, like http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ox3Usvs65bI/TYzXgkQQfiI/AAAAAAAAPQ0/X31XRikT4C8/s1600/tundra.jpg. The brown tundra is closer to this, but it'd be nice to see them add more color diversity like this tundra has it.

Also, I feel the brown will stand out more to the other green regions of the game such as the pine forest and the marsh.
