Possible graphics / DX11 update for PC

Post » Thu Jul 15, 2010 5:10 am

As Todd said a few weeks ago, they are thinking about adding some DX11 features later on, although the game does not use any at the moment. To give Beth a better idea how many people would be interested in such a patch or DLC for enhanced graphics and/or more DX11 features, I made this little poll.

Please only vote if you are a PC user.

Absolutely I would be interested. I wouldn't WANT to pay for it, but so long as it's priced fairly I wouldn't mind. I want Skyrim to be as future proof as possible (considering it will most likely be 6-8 years before we get another one), and a DX11 patch would add to that.

Plus it would be optional. It's not like if your PC can't handle DX11 you'd still HAVE to install it.

Would even pay for it. If I can pay money for other DLC that adds quests, I'd sure as hell pay for graphics. Whole new experience of the game.

BUT, I wouldn't necessarily want DX11 features. Just better graphics. It has been proven by Witcher 2 and Crysis 2 that DX9 can be made hella' beautiful and stunning graphics-wise.

It makes no sense for Beth to charge for something like this.

Why not put the extra $10 we are already giving them to good use and provide a 64-bit executable, an official high res texture pack and a patch for DX11 features?

If you add up the extra $10 that goes directly to Bethesda for every single PC copy sold, that is a lot of money.

Yeah but that would probably also make people disappointed who can't use that tech stuff. How would you feel if you had a medium-good computer and then be forced to pay $10 more for something you can't even use?

But yeah, they would earn more money :)
But at the same time, more people would be disappointed if they found out that the extra $10 was for them all in vain.

If they can't use it, why would they even worry about getting it?

We are already paying this $10 anyways. I don't know what you mean by "earn more money"?

The PC and console retail prices are the same. $10 for the console versions goes to Sony and MS. Bethesda keeps the extra $10 for the PC version.

Why would you be FORCED to buy it? IF your system can't handle it, there would be no reason for someone to purchase it.

If one wants to play on PC, and it costs 10$ more for everyone just for graphics, then it's better for the consumers if the same results were achieved through a DLC, so that those who can't use the new graphics on their computer (but still want to play on the PC of course), can still play the game without feeling cheated of 10$.

Although that would probably never happen, as, like said before, Bethesda would earn more by adding it from the start. And the consumers wouldn't be disappointed unless they actually knew about it :)

If they charged another $10 for DLC then PC users would be paying $20!

PC users are already paying $10 extra, because the retail price for all versions is the same - $60 (at least as of today).

IMO they can afford to throw us a bone with an official hi res 2048x2048 texture pack or something similar.

except the core game is already $60. if PC gamers are forced to pay an extra $10 for no real reason other than Bethesda deciding "hey why not" and get no actual bonuses to the game and then pay another $10 to get a game that finally looks like a PC game from 2011, i really don't think people would look on it very kindly, especially given other multiplat developers releasing that [censored] either with the core game (Metro 2033, DIRT) or as a free patch (Dragon Age 2).

i have no problem at all with the graphics as they stand but i'd be cool if they released a high-res texture pack or whatever.

If you look at games that have already come out or are coming out at about the same time as Skyrim, it because clear that PC gaming is already beginning the transition to DX11. By not including it in Skyrim, that means it is lagging behind the curve or current trend. That's what worries me. It means that when TES VI rolls around, Skyrim will look more outdated than Oblivion does now.

It's not the same everywhere, though. In the UK and Germany for example, the PC version is cheaper than the console versions.
I don't know how they justify the price in the US, but it doesn't seem that Bethesda gets more from every PC copy.

They'll probably force you to use Steam, though, so that when you go register your game, they'll see you have a UK version with a US address and not allow you to register it.
