Is it possible to play skyrim on my notebook?

Post » Sat Jun 18, 2011 1:15 pm

I'm not a tech geek so dont laugh too hard when I post this but I have a HP G72 notebook with intel pentium p6000 @ 1.87GHz, 4GB RAM, 64 bit operating system....these are the specs in my computer properties and I'm not sure what kind of video card (or where to find the specs for that matter).

Is it wishful thinking to run a game like skyrim on this or is it possible?

need to know what is your video card and what is your display resolution.

otherwise we cannot provide meaningful feedback.

To see the rest of your specs, you could try dxdiag at "run". You could also download a program like CPU-Z or something and check it out. It doesn't seem your processor will be able to handle it however...
This http://www.systemrequirements.in/system-requirements-for-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim.html seems to think these are the minimum and recommended specs:
Minimum System Requirements
* OS: Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7
* CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz or Althon X2 2.0 GHz
* RAM: 3 GB
* HDD: 15 GB
* Graphics: 512 MB card
* Sound Card: DirectX 9 Compatible
* DirectX: Version 9.0c
Recommended System Requirements
* OS: Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7
* CPU: Core 2 Quad 3 GHz
* RAM: 3 GB
* HDD: 15 GB free disk space
* Graphics: 512 MB Graphics Memory
* Sound Card: DirectX 9 Compatible
* DirectX: Version 9.0c

try running some other recent games. Skyrim most likely won't be more demanding than other 2010-2011 AAA games

you might just have to reduce the resolution a lot (down to 800x600) and reduce detail settings, but it will probably still be playable.

IMO below 1600x900 resolution you would really be missing out on the visual experience, however. Better to wait until you can build a gaming desktop or buy a new laptop.

I dont get how I get warnings for being a troll but people dont get warnings for being downright childish and infantile. We need to re-examine our values.

It's interesting that the predicted requirements only ask for a 512 MB graphics card. I was under the impression that it was hard to buy a new computer with less than 1GB. Seems strange if this isn't being utilised?

Ignore those predicted requirements. It's generic requirements that are not specific to skyrim, and the resolution of your display makes a lot more difference.

In general however, most recent 2010-2011 games are playable at high settings on laptops at 1920x1080 resolution with a 1GB NVIDIA 460m, 555m, AMD 5830m or similar card.

If your monitor or laptop display is very low resolution like 1280x720, which is standard for PS3 and XBox360, then you can get by with a much weaker card.

If you can run OB, you can run Skyrim. Both are developed for the current consoles..

Yes but surely the new textures/ atmospheric effects etc. will require more from your computer? Games that were released when the 360 first came out have considerably lower system requirements when ported to the PC than new games do.

No. My laptop can run CoD4 but it can't run Black Ops. Both use the same engine and are developed for current consoles.

It is strange then that Oblivion is one of my most demanding games ;)

If you can't find the vidcard specs as readily as the rest of the specs, then it's probably an Intel Integrated Sorry-Excuse-For-A-Video card, incapable of running games.

Well I suppose that would depend on how many games you have...? But yeh, considering it's age Oblivion is a fairly demanding game.

That doesn't make any sense. There are hundreds of games developed for the current consoles and not all of them are equally demanding.

Even other Gamebryo games like FO3 and FNV are more demanding than Oblivion. On my laptop, for example, I get constant 60fps in vanilla Oblivion at 1920x1080, max settings, with vsync enabled. However, with FO3 and FNV I only get around 40fps, and I have to disable water refracting and water resampling.

I'm expecting to see the final requirements for Skyrim around the time the Collector's Edition version of the game is announced.

I'm definitely going to need a new PC/laptop for Skyrim but I'm waiting for the final recommended requirements are published.

Last time I played FO3 I had better fps on average than Oblivion. It's a better optimized game. Though it can vary allot between different rigs(or so I heard).

Interesting - I hadn't heard about that. Which graphics card do you have?

I have the AMD 5830m.

Errmm.. I'm not sure what card I had at that time :P Either a nvidia 8800GT or the ati 4870 I had later, hmm not sure.

I have a ati5870 now, but only have Oblivion installed, and it's heavily modified now, so a comparison would be difficult :P

edit: It's still pretty demanding without the mods. (Just so I don't invalidate my earlier post here :P )

Oblivion with a heavy mod load is demanding on the CPU as well. In addition to all the other stuff, the CPU has to do the basic geometry plotting.

Not for me. On both of my computers Oblivion runs better. FO3 seems to be much more demanding on the CPU, and slightly more graphically demanding at max settings.
