Possible Solution to Old School vs New School game play.

Post » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:23 pm

You know, there is always this debate that goes on for which style of game play is better.

And the debates always end up with the same conclusion. No matter what style the alleged sequel is in, it will inevitably alienate one group of Descenters. As such the rift that was driven through the middle of the descent community when D3 was released will only continue.

So set up the game differently. Give the server ops the option to set up the different styles of gameplay. Like the old days when you could go into the arcade and select TURBO mode.

Servers can be set up with 3 options. Classic with D1 or D2 checkboxes which will make the gameplay/physics like the those oldies but goodies that hold a special place in our hearts... and then a Turbo mode which gives the fast speed intense gameplay that D3 offered for all of those adrenaline and carnage junkies.

We all know which descent is the best... all of them. Image

I like that idea. It makes sense for allowing both methods to be used. Something else to consider is the type of graphics. Who would like the new graphics with the shading and reflections, and who would prefer the older style that is plainer and simpler, yet has its own appeal?

I wouldn't get too much into having different graphical options. Just seems like one more thing to break or be exploited.

But seriously, you've got to have a physics option... so the entire community can be brought back together after it was ripped apart by PXO.

Any way they cut it, they'd almost HAVE to make it with the physics options. Otherwise, they'll essentially be alienating 1/3rd of the fans. Image

My suggestion that I had in another topic was have D2 physics in the mines and have D3 physics outside of the mines.

The options idea is a good one. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

wow this thread has been dead for awhile lol

i like the whole Classic/turbo idea. i dont know how this would apply to campaign or anything, but gamesas could design maps that will appeal to each side in MP...idk watcha think?

im not exactly sure. i know theres a turbo mode for Street Fighter, but i imagine that its like an alternative form of gameplay thats faster. How this would work for Descent would be that it would draw a line between the classic (tunnel/claustrophobia) experience in D1/D2 from the new (dogfighting) experience in D3 in order to not alienate any of the fans of the game. So i guess when you choose multiplayer from the main menu, it would ask Classic or Turbo, or have something to choose between them. This would keep it simple and the player could choose between the two to match their prefered style of gameplay.

You obviously have not played Descent multiplayer too often. Go to http://www.slyclan.de, grab Vortex, play a few Descent 3 games, and tell me that that is not turbo enough. Any game, whether it be D1/D2/D3, is always fast. Any faster and we would not be able to control our ships. It's like organized chaos as it is. Everyone is operating as fast as their minds can think while slinging ordanance everywhere.

Or maybe I'm not getting your point and I'm still confused.

But grab Vortex anyways. Its got chat rooms and a tracker! ;)

EDIT: Yes. I'm very confused, because isn't turbo what Gallows mentioned at the top? If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

I was asking because the Descent 1/2 code has a "turbo mode" flag, it just doesn't seem to get used. If it would be interesting for D1/D2 multiplayer I could make it have an effect though, like e.g. speeding every movement (ship, weapons, robots) up by some percentage. Image

lol to cypher, yea you kinda misunderstood me. i guess the use of "turbo" is easily misleading. i just meant for the term "classic" to refer to the classic tunnel experience of D1 & D2 whereas "turbo" refers to the dog fighting style of D3. i didnt mean to say that the actually physics will be altered to be turbo lol

and on a side note, you're right about my multiplayer experience. i've never ever gotten it to work :( i think it has something to do with my router or something...idk. ive tried using game spy which supports D3 and ive tried using some of the dedicated servers on Planet Descent, but both methods end in utter failure :( one thing i've always wanted to do was play D2 online also. Coop would be fun too :)

this is from the Descent 4 thread. i thought it pertained to this thread too lol

oooh like before a mission, you get to pick ur weapon setup? or u pick a certain role (also with certain built in perks) and you can only equip the type of weps/missles that are useable by ur role? of course u can change role in battle (like CoD). That way all weps could, in theory, be brought back from all the games. of course there would be a limit on how many weps you could carry at a time depending on the ship you pick (i.e. black pyro has 5 gun space to hold 5 different cannons and 4 missle mounts whereas the smaller faster recon phoenix would hold 2 or 3 cannons and have 2 missle banks) like in freespace. by mixing the ships and roles (i.e. sniper [with a toned down MD], heavy assault [increased gun mounts and missle banks by 1 and access to heavy weps like fusion and omega. it will also have +25% space for all missles], recon/interceptor [flash missle, merc missle increased speed, toggled camo], space superiority [well rounded balanced role]) obviously all roles would have access to the same necessary and basic weps like the lasers, or conc missles and homing missles. by mixing and matching the ships and roles, you can maximize a certain quality. for example, putting recon/intercepter wouldnt be wise to put on a magnum, but if you have a reason, go ahead lol but this whole system would allow for ALL weapons to return with some changes of course. i dont suggest the CoD style of leveling up in order to unlock weapons cuz descent doesnt have THAT many weapons lol

this may, in a way, maybe bring together the D2 and D3 crowds a little more? a little give, a little take. making something totally new of the sequel. of course maybe there could be classic modes for D2 and D3 fans who prefer one over the other and mayb dont like the new system. or it could be an escape from the new system and a return to the old.

just trying to please everyone here :)
