Post 2nd Patch - Same exact problem

Post » Mon Jun 07, 2010 3:12 pm

Every single time I start a new game, I get about 1 second into the video and the game crashes to the desktop, with the classic "Fallout has stopped working". The launcher runs perfectly every time, and I havent had any issues in the main menu.

I have tried the following.
-The DLL fix
-deleting the launch video and erasing the code in the launch file
-changing the number of cores used
-deleting all known codecs
-verify game integrity (does not give me the 1 file error)
-complete reinstall (its a digital steam version)
-multiple computer restarts
-limiting the number of CPU cores used
-single/dual monitors
-multiple resolutions/graphics settings

The game saves my graphics settings just fine, and I have never had any issues with saved games because I can't get the chance to make one...

After two patches that seem to fix the issues for the people who can already get in the game, I feel as though Obsidian is ignoring those of us who can't even play. I am extremely disappointed with this launch, but remain hopeful. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

here is my dxdiag.

I would suggest getting new video card drivers and making sure you have the microsoft visual c++ runtime library installed.

You should be able to get new video drivers from this page: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

and the microsoft stuff should be this one: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en&pf=true

Try that out and update us.

I have tired updating my drivers. It causes a BSOD, on both catalyst 10.7 and 10.8. They seem to work with other users so I think its a compatibility issue with my computer.

Gnoah, have you been able to update your drivers?

You should open up event viewer and see what it reports about the crash

Yeah, they haven't released a patch to address the crash and performance issues yet. The first patch was for in-game scripting bugs and such, and the second was just to address the missing savegame issue. They said they're working on the hardware compatibility issues.

I would wager its a video card driver issue. Try to find a way to install those drivers, you may be able to find other people who have that card or that particular computer and have already found a way to do it on another forum.

Yea, that has been my conclusion too. I'm just waiting for the correct patch. Again, the issues in game seem to be their target right now....while some of us can't play, period. All I can do now is wait it out, and keep this little fiascoe in mind next game a game purchase of mine involves obsidian and/or Bethesda.

Can't say I blame you. Seems like buying games nowadays is like drawing straws. The folks that draw the short ones can't run the game until a patch is released to fix a crash bug or a driver problem is fixed to allow proper compatibility. I couldn't even get Mass Effect 2 to install for the first few days I had it. It's no fun.

I'm guessing there won't be a fix for it, you'll probably need the new drivers anyway. Just do it now, get it over with, and play it like the rest of us.

I registered just to say I have the same laptop - Lenovo Y560 - but with switchable graphics card (ATI HD5730 and on-board Intel HD). Same problem - crashes a second into the intro movie. Tried the dll "fix", made sure no xvid or whatever codec installed, disabling Intel HD, disabling the ATI 5730 and running the game using the Intel HD.... All crash a second into the intro movie. No difference.

And for people suggesting we update the drivers, WE WANT TO! When we do, we see BSOD or no video output. Lenovo laptops with switchable graphic cards are not as easy to update as ... say, desktops. We need to rely on Lenovo to release the graphic card drivers. I admit our future looks quite gloomy.

*edit* Forgot to point out I'm running it on Win7 Pro x64.

As I said before, the new drivers, including catalyst 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 all cause a BSOD on my computer. I have tried them multiple times, in the correct fashion, with a complete uninstall of the previous drivers and anything related to ATI or catalyst. All of them cause a BSOD on startup, and windows automatically reverts to a backup. The drivers would be great, but they are not an option for me.

Thank you Parrot, I'm glad somebody understands where I'm coming from here. This is getting ridiculous, and it seems like nothing is helping.

This seems to be a big, recurring problem for a great number of us, and none of the developer's reps seem to be expressing much feedback about it. What a crock. And then they expect us to spend hours upon hours posting system information to their forum database servers so that they can solve the problem. When do we get to send them a bill for the use of our computers, our information and our time? Isn't that why I paid them $50.

edit- the problem isn't the developers of the game, the problem is that the manufactures of the laptops don't allow you guys to use the normal drivers. They make it so you have to use their own special ones for whatever reason, so they never actually update them and you guys get stuck thinking its ATI's fault when its really Lenovos.

Alright guys if you have that lenovo try downloading just the drivers of the 10.7s, i did a very quick search and somebody said they were able to install the 10.7s successfully (whereas the 10.8s were giving them crashes).

The OP's Y560 has the i7 and therefore one graphics card. Mine is a i5 with two (switchable) graphics card. The following applies only to the i5, can't say the i7.

The i5 model has officially-released 10.8 driver from Lenovo. I have that driver. Same crash same place.

I'm on the core i7 and therefore only have the HD 5730. I have tried 10.7 and 10.8 and blue screen on both.

Common so far - Lenovo Y560 (yes a laptop), with ATI 5730 card. Mine running on 10.8, OP running on 10.6.

The problem is not specific to Lenova hardware: I too have the immediate crash upon launch problem, and I'm running on a desktop with completely different specs.

I want to make sure you mean after you start a new game, and it crashes a second into the intro movie? <-- This thread.
If you crash when you launch the game, or even before that at the launcher, or AFTER you view the whole intro movie after you start a new game, they are likely different problems and there are numerous other threads covering those.
