Post-API Change: Will War Tools Still Work?

Post » Mon Mar 24, 2014 10:53 pm

There's an awesome raid addon for ESO - Wykkyd's War Tools (http://www.nexusmods.com/elderscrollsonline/mods/11/?), which allows the party leader to mark out targets etc. I'm wondering if, post-api changes, it'll still work in game?

The reason I'm asking is for hard of hearing players, while Teamspeak is all well and good, it's not very helpful for those unable to take advantage of it, a tool like this could make things a lot easier for those players.

Thanks!

I don't think marking targets is a really bad thing...its a communication tool.

I would have no idea if it works.....but if it does or will on release, there is no harm in it (IMO).

Agreed, and for some people who are hard of hearing it'd be an invaluable tool. Ofc we've got teamspeak and chat, but in the middle of a battle what's easier? Frantically typing out a clear instruction or quickly marking your target and triggering a pre-written instruction? I'm very keen that ALL of our members are included in all activities and that there are no barriers to entry - so I'm really hoping this tool still works.

I've emailed the Wykkyd directly, so hopefully will hear soon :)

Okay I've heard back and it's not good news - the API restrictions put in place mean the addon no longer works as it once did! :(

A lot of good add-ons are unfortunately going to go away because of the API change.

This isn't on. The stripped back UI and importance of team communication in group activity means that people who need these tools could be getting left behind. Pretty peeved about this so have started a thread addressing the subject a little more directly: http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1496584-any-tools-for-hard-of-hearing/

Being able to primary targets is a very huge advantage in PvP. It would of course mean that those groups running with the addon would have a distinct advantage over any group NOT running the addon.

Which is why the API received the change it did before the game went live. It is safer to start with very little information, than to possibly ruin the balance of the game on launch day by having too much available. Hopefully through careful testing and observation of live player behavior, we'll get an API that's full of goodness, without giving too much advantage to API and addon users.

Of course, then you get to the second question: if the addon doesn't give you an advantage over others, would you still consider using it?

I understand the logic, which is perfectly sound until you realise it's excluding groups of players.

If you are hearing impared then teamspeak isn't going to be a lot of good to you, if your group are in the middle of a battle then typing a clear message in chat isn't going to be very easy - there's nothing in this game to level accessibility for those people who want to remain competitive, but are hearing impaired.

I addressed accessibility options in the other post. In this, I was specifically addressing the over-reliance players would have on addons.

There is no accessibility options right now, I agree. But a balance-breaking addon that would ruin an end-game asset for many players being allowed to continue when Zenimax knows better? Bigger folly outright.

As said in the other post. Doesn't necessarily need to be an addon (it just so happens that the addon I mention up top was the only decent solution available till it was gimped), I'd rather it was a native solution, included in the game and available to everyone.

Zenimax may well have to rethink their stance on the API when they find the only people playing the game are soloers. Unfortunately there is a far better solo Elder Scrolls based game already on the market. It's called Skyrim.

And this is all because of the whiners and complainers about the addons because they think it's an unfair advantage.

The addon was primarily designed for pve.

This kind of thing annoys people. Changing things for the sake of pvp.
