Post Polls Correctly!

Post » Wed Jul 21, 2010 4:28 am

I have noticed more and more polls that keep popping up that have either been unecessary, confusing, or were misleading due to the large amount of options. An example of a poll like this can be seen above. I voted for Yes but without butter. Here are some tips to follow when designing a poll and deciding whether to make one. Enjoy.

Tip 1. Make it Simple

Many people put too much thought for alternative choices. This is a no-no. Put as few choices as possible so it is easily readable and the results are as accurate as possible. In the example poll, many options are presented, making the poll too complicated and taking up too much space. a better alternative to the poll would be:

Do you like waffles?
1. Yes
2. No
3. So-So

Tip 2. Is Your Poll Relevant?

Make sure that your post is related to your post (and not Fallout 3) and is related to Fallout: New Vegas. If it is not, then don't post it. An example of this is the waffle poll which follows this tip because it is being used actively in this thread.

Tip 3. Is it Even Needed?

One of the biggest things you need to think about is whether or not a poll is needed. If it is a simple question, a poll would probably be a good idea. If the question is complicated and would require explaining to answer, then a poll would be unecessary.

Tip 4. Has This Been Posted Before?

While this isn't directly related to polls this is an important thing to consider. Before posting a thread asking a question or gauging people's opinions through a poll, try using the search button to see if someone has done this. It is located on the right side of the site's toolbar (the grey bar with your name and avatar on it). Using the search button can prevent repeat topics from coming up and prevents headaches and flaming. But to be safe, if you find a thread matching your question, you should probably take a look at it before assuming that your question has already been answered.

Well I hope you enjoyed these tips I've posted. It's a small mission that I have to prevent :brokencomputer: and :flamethrower: and have more of :foodndrink:
