Major Factions
The New California Republic:
Modeled on the old United States of America, this faction represents traditional law and order. Their missions tend to focus on things like reducing crime, securing infrastructure.
The biggest advantage to working with the NCR is that their authority is generally accepted everywhere outside of Caesar's camp and parts of New Vegas. If you have good relations with the NCR, you will be welcome at every shop, trading post, town, and military base.
On the flip side, the NCR does not accept bad behavior. Just a few mistakes, and you'll find yourself shunned from polite society.
[MY OPINION] - I think the NCR is too controlling and did not bother joining them, however i did help them as much as i could in order to get the rewards...
Caesar's Legion
This faction is modeled loosely on the structure of the ancient Roman Empire. In reality, they operate more like a petty oligarchy and Caesar is little more than a petty warlord.
Their missions tend to focus on random violence and destabilizing the region.
The major advantage of working with the legion is free reign to do as you please. Of course, the NCR will be upset. But, if you are looking to play a terrible bastard, then Caesar's Legion is the faction for you.
Keep in mind, pretty much everyone hates the Legion. Once you start down that road, no one will do business with you and people may start to shoot at you on sight. But, who needs to do business when you can just pillage and steal?
[MY OPINION] - Exactly as said above, everyone hates the Legion. I do not have a problem with fighting strangers along the road, and they would be just an annoyance...
Mr. House
Mr. House is defacto ruler of the city of New Vegas by virtue of a small army of robotic enforcers. He has one major goal in life. Return New Vegas to it's glory days.
To this end, House managed to wrestle together several bands of former desert gangs, granting each control over a large casino, under the condition that it run as it would have in the heyday of Los Vegas.
House is quite powerful on the strip and in the areas immediately adjacent to New Vegas. Outside of this area, his power diminishes quickly. The NCR is also suspicious of House, so you may find that after working with him certain places are suddenly off limits and certain people are suddenly less friendly.
[MY OPINION] - I did like Mr House, espically his XP glitch where i got max level lol, but I didn't side with him in the very end.
The People of New Vegas
There is a fourth psuedo-faction which is key to the game. It is not a formal collection of people. Rather, there exist many residents of New Vegas and the Mohave who support none of the other factions
These individuals would prefer to see an independent state of New Vegas. It is only possible to work towards this goal indirectly until very late in the game. In other words, you can work for unaffiliated New Vegas residents, but you cannot really work towards New Vegas independence until near the end of the core story line. Though, there are a few significant missions earlier in the game.
For the most part, these missions are neutral for the Legion and NCR. However, some will prompt animosity on the part of House. A small number will also worsen relations with the Legion.
[MY OPINION] Definately the way to go, being independent and ruling the wastes yourself (with Yes-Man) was my favourite and best choice.
Minor factions
The Brotherhood of Steel
This faction is devoted to collecting, researching and protecting lost technology. Their missions occasionally impact relations with other factions since some involve stealing technology, but for the most part, they are neutral. The Brotherhood of Steel has some excellent toys.
[MY OPINION] They did have some good gear, I did help them out quite a bit, until i blew up their base and took anything valuable
Boomers
The Boomers are a group of religious fanatics who have settled on Nellis Air Force Base. Helping the Boomers has absolutely no influence on relations with others and they are incredibly useful at various points in the game. They also give you a mask which allows unlimited breathing underwater. This is stupidly useful and almost a necessity.
[MY OPINION] They can supply you with a unique grenade launcher known as the Thump Thump, they are nice and i like them.
Gun Runners
The Gun Runners are a group of neutral arms dealers working out of New Vegas. Help them in anyway you can if you want access to cheap prices on good guns and ammo.
[MY OPINION] I did help them when they offered, got some good combat gear and unique gear...
The Kings
The Kings are a petty gang of Elvis impersonators who control parts of Freeside. Their cooperation will help with several missions involving Freeside and entering New Vegas. Also, helping them will get you an awesome robot dog.
[MY OPINION] I had recieved Rex as an award for helping the Kings but I technically joined the Kings. I like them.
Crimson Caravan
This is a large trading operation which handles shipments of goods from inside the NCR into the Mohave. They are involved in a number of mission which focus on one of the major companion characters.
[MY OPINION] Never was really interested in them, I had to take em out to help the Van Graffs
The Van Graffs
A small, but significant criminal factions specializing primarily in dealing with energy weapons. They also own a casino in Freeside. If you are into energy weapons, then do some work for the Van Graffs. But, remember, this may cause problems with the Gun Runners.
[MY OPINION] I really liked these guys but i had to betray them to help Cass and help the Gun Runners
The Bright Brotherhood
A group of religiously fanatic ghouls located in an abandoned missile silo. They want your help getting themselves shot into space. Be a nice guy and help them out. Or murder them all and take their stuff. Whatever. It does not impact anything else. Helping them does add a funny news story to the radio feed.
[MY OPINION] Reminds me of Fallout 3 for some reason lol but they are nice people and i loved the mission, "Come fly with me"
The Great Khans
The largest and most organized of the various groups of raiders. They can be recruited to help in other missions.
[MY OPINION] I had underestimated these guys. The Great Kahns, despite them shooting me in the head, are actually a really powerful faction. I had sided with them and had access to good guns, nice clothing, and hell and of alot of drugs...
Followers of the Apocalypes
A group of healers and researchers from the Core regions of the NCR. This group exists solely to serve others. They should be helped whenever possible.

Jacobstown
[MY OPINION] Definately the most unqiue and my favourite faction....
This is a collection of random individuals of different races. Here, super mutants, ghouls, humans, and even nightkin live together in relative harmony.
