Which school of magic?

Post » Fri Oct 22, 2010 6:31 pm

So i am going to create a altmer under the aprentice. I know I want destruction, Illusion, and Mysticism. What I was wondering is what out of the other schools would be usefull?

Alteration: shields and open spells. Let me elaborate a little. I see from your other thread, you're going for an Altmer Apprentice. The shield spells will help protect you in battle, especially when you cast them before battle, and have them long-duration

conjuration: meat shields :flamethrower: as for conjuration, these meat shields will be invaluable when fighting more than one enemy, as the conjured daedra can distract the other enemies.

hope that helped :)

edit: elaboration

Depending on how you wish to play I would swap out Destruction for another skill instead. However Alteration is a must have for any Magic character I feel. Conjuration is useful for Meat Shields and back-up just incase. However don't forget to spend some time working on Restoration and Alchemy for useful extras. If you want a real challanage take them as extra Major Skills alongside the others.

i like being a nightblade...speed power endurance and the ablility to play with spells......when i was a battlemage it focused more on spells i think...but i am one being a nord to like the power also.....no matter what you are you can overcome what is before you...my favorite in the past was a simple ranger......but also when choosing your peep consider what you want to do when you choose a sign...lately i have chosen the mage...in the past it wasn't so...but i figure i can gain what i need from the others...mage has no complications...and it comes in handy...i never had a pilgram or crusader that failed me..but them were the days i didn't use spells.......i am comfortable being where i am....but i have to warn you...you pick up stuff that makes you very fast......you have to be what you want to be, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise....be yourself

I personal always make sure that whatever class I am in, it always has Illusion. The Illuminating spells come in handy or if you want to be stealth, there are night eyes spells which can be a theft best friend. Then there is the invisibility spells which is definitely my favorite of spells and most used.

i like to be able to fight...considering spells....what are the best spells to have in a cave.....knowing whats around is one...being able to heal yourself is tops....i have on my keys minor and major heal, then a fireball, then being able to carry more....then a where are they spell,....then a waterbreathing....a light cause i like to see underwater...and the rest are in my books...i go to every temple and pick up the restore spells....restore intelligiance, wisdom, strength, all they have to offer...then when you get some money and some friendship from the mages guild...they offer alot...if thats how you want to play...i am not even a magic user...but i use everything.........if you get the open easy lock you don't need to use a lockpick...keep on that...you might have to buy it in chey....but its worth i...if the locks get hard you should see a person about the key....i'm having flashbacks of morrowind...i didn't know what was going on...i just walked.....maybe thats what you should do....just walk and see where you end up

I'd swap out Destruction personally because I feel its a very one sided school of Magic. I like using Illusion and Conjuration to take down my foes but thats my personal view. Its mainly because so many people I've known and still know think that because they play a Mage or Magic based character that they have to throw fireballs and shoot lightning with their fingertips. There are thousands of ways to kill someone with Magic and many people think they can do it with Destruction only. Try swapping it out for something else and use the other schools to a fuller extent, but thats just me.

One of the main reasons to avoid using Destruction, if you are an Altmer Apprentice, is enemies who have the ability to cast Reflect Spell. And there are a lot of them. With your built-in weakness, this is a good way to get killed.

It may not be a spell based magic school, but you should consider Alchemy

I disagree. Alchemy levels too quickly to be a major skill, and if OP is going to be playing a mage alchemy would be near useless, as they wouldn't have any weapons to poison and most potion effects could be recreated by the other magic schools more efficiently.

I'm partial to conjuration myself. Distracting your enemy while you run around, paralyze and then finish them off never gets old.

Just curios besides Command humanoid/creature and conjuration what else kills with out destruction?

For the reason stated above I will never choose alchemy again.

Restoration. Will-o-the-Wisps a prime example in the effectiveness in Restoration abilities in an offensive format.

You have access to all different types of weapons with Conjuration along with Armor aswell, so thats one way to deal with your foes. There are other spells within Illusion that will allow you to do many things apart from the Command spells. Do not also forget that there are offensive spells within other schools. Absorb Spells in Restoration work aswell.

Like many, I find alchemy very powerful, helpful and fun. Like many, I would never select it as a major skill since it levels faster than I would like.

Selecting major skills doesn't necessarily have to relate to what you use, nor do they have to define your character. Major skills simply affect how you level - I choose them based on that.

I never thought in terms of leveling when I discovered Lothran, mainly because I had no idea about it. I didn′t think of that now either, I just mentioned a magic school I really like :)

If I should make another character now though, I would do it much differently

This is what i meant. I will use alchemy but I will not choose it as a major skill.

By the way the build is working well I just have to be careful when throwing fireballs around because reflect spells almost kill me.
