Nomura and his team are still working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, though he's said that they're looking into hardware options for Kingdom Hearts III.

If you're a fan of the series then you owe it to yourself to at least try out the handheld games if possible. Birth by Sleep was, IMO, the best in terms of combat thus far.

Quite. Birth by Sleep is my favorite in the series so far, actually, if only because it cleared up a lot of questions I had from the original series.

Eh, 358/2 days was okay, considering it was made pretty much solely for the purpose of appeasing the fans of Organization 13. The plot really threw me for a loop though. It was a bit out there, even for Kingdom Hearts, and I'm already convinced that Nomura is on some sort of drug when he sits down to write the storyline.

It's not too bad to be honest. Kingdom Hearts II released in 2005, so it was in all likelihood to be continued on new platforms anyway. They just went with handhelds for the time being, which is a shame considering the number of folks that don't seem to consider handhelds as legitimate game systems anymore. Luckily they ported Chain of Memories to PS2 and KH: coded to DS, so if you had a PS2, PSP and DS then you can play very title released so far. Replace DS with 3DS and you're even ahead of the game, set for Dream Drop Distance's release.

If you shop around then you can grab a used DS Lite and PSP for $60-70 each. Or, if you decide to wait until Kingdom Hearts III actually is released, you'll be able to catch up on the story dirt cheap because the PSP and DS will be ancient by then.

I hope that when/if it comes out, it's on consoles rather than just handhelds..

If it is going to be announced, it will be announced soon. All of their upcoming games are due to be released over the next few months. This means that they will be looking to announce projects that are in development.

I love the kingdom hearts series. Birth by Sleep being my favorite thus far, My problem with the whole series though is how japan always gets a final mix with extras while everyone else is stuck with the vanilla game or they import the game.

Pretty much everything we have is in this thread already. They are currently working on Versus XIII, and thus we'll have to wait - but the secret movie at the end of Birth by Sleep hints at a huge new adventure for Sora, who'll finally tie up all those loose ends.

Agreed. The original is easily my favourite followed by KH2. The handheld games is terrible IMO. 358/2 Days was mediocre, KH: CoM and BbS is amoung the worst games i have ever played. I am done with the series until the next real chapter.

I should probably finish it though.

I remember playing the first as a kid and thought I was a god when I finally beat the game. Seemed like the bosses were ridiculous but probably because I was young. Can't wait until I purchase a PS2 again and then I'll playthrough the first and second.

Seems like it'll be Dream Drop Distance, though Birth by Sleep and the secret ending itself really did wonders for the story. They tied up some of those loose ends and then created new ones in only a way a Kingdom Hearts game could.

Spoiler
DDD's trailer shows the scene where Sora gets the message in a bottle from Mickey, which was in both the BbS secret ending and Kingdom Hearts II's ending. If so then it really backs up what Nomura said about Dream Drop Distance setting up Kingdom Hearts III. The way BbS ended I can't imagine them dragging it out much longer. I imagine some amazing finale with Sora's story coming to an end, freeing Terra from Xehanort, Aqua coming out of the darkness, etc. I haven't seen BbS Final Mix's extra chapter for Aqua though.

I don't know. I've replayed 'em all within the last year and some of the bosses can still be tricky. Not sure I'd really call any of 'em hard though, and any trouble I had was because I was young and terrible at games. Chain of Memories had some of the most troublesome bosses (particularly in Riku's story), thanks in part to the card system. Even then it was just a matter of having the right skills (or cards) and good timing.

Well, okay, Riku and Sora seem to be head to out to become masters then, but only to prepare for the big battle in this one.
Oh boy, this is a confusing timeline.

I know, same with Chrono and DQ. Hey idiots, just because a console is fashionable, it doesn't mean your fanbase actually own one.

Actually, in Japan it means just that. Besides Japanese gamers not commonly being under the opinion that handheld games are not real games.
