How Will Shouts Be Used?

Post » Tue Nov 02, 2010 4:11 am

From what I've heard the shouts seem very complex, such as whispering syllables or actually shouting. It seems like it would work really well if you could actually use the mic to actually speak the Shouts in the ways the developers say it will be used. It just seems like it would be so much more fluid to use the mic than by something on the gamepad, though grant it I don't think they've said how exactly it will be implemented. what do you guys think?

Headsets...nah. Yelling dragonic at the top of my lungs at the screen doesn't sound cool. It'll scare those old neighbers next door though.

Not to mention my Minnesota accent. Only the divines know what Skyrim would pick up when I say shIn dO rAh.

This is an idea I can do without
(Come on)
I'm talking to you
(So come on)

If I wanted to talk to my game, I would play an MMO....

Problem with implementing this would be the consoles. Do they even have a sound capture mechanism? I know you can use headsets to talk to others, but that seems to me to part of an independent stream from the game content. So, all the consoles would have to have circuitry that would record your voice, digitize it, send it to the game for comparison to the source files. While most PCs have some sort of sound circuits, not all of them have Sound Capture, nor do most people even have their rigs set up to this. While this processing is not that complex, it does svck up CPU cycles on a machine, so the game could suffer performance problems, even if this would work.

Yes, the 360 is capable of this. I'll be using the PC and have no desire to voice ingame shouts either.
^^ as far as I know with the Kinect.

PS3, not sure.

Well yeah with the Move and Kinect you can but seeing how they already said they didn't want to use cheap (content wise, not cost wise) gimmicks on their game that doesn't matter.

im thinking for the consoles at least maybe one of the bumper buttons? somewhere in the ui select the particular shout you want to have equipped then if you want to use the first word of the shout just press it once if you want the second and third part of it just hold it down longer.. a system like that wouldn't be too difficult for the player to use effectively

Its freezing! Makes me wonder why people are getting so excited over realistic snow in Skyrim. To me, its a horrifying idea. I sware, if I see just one shovel, I'm going to save and then oblidarate an entire town. Infact its snowing right now, bleh.

Although, as much as I hate to admit it, my favorite town so far has probably been Bruma. My inner nord just can't help it...

Does any other than me see a similarity between dragon shouts and sigil stones. Sigil stones are strong fixed enchantments you used outside the enchantment process. I feel that dragon shouts would be spells who is outside the standard spell effects and is used pretty different.
Also feel like many reporters mix up spells and dragon shouts.
I feel that dragon shouts are combined to make the wanted effect, it can also be upgraded as i understand.

Feel it strange if they removed the spellmaker, who has been with us since Daggerfall as it will piss of most serious fans, far more than removing spears and adding the compass.
Even stanger then enchanting is back as a skill.
Yes the spellmaker has weaknesses and can be exploited but solving it would be simple, remove some or all skills from custom spells creation to avoid charm 100 and fortify skill 100 for 2 seconds, now remove or simply don't let weakness to magic stack and the exploits are gone.
pretty similar to how enchanting was nerfed in Oblivion to get rid of the worst exploits.

Do! Ra! Ma! Get! Me! Some! Cheesy-Poofs!

Do! Re! Mi! Fa! Sol! La! Ti!
Let's see if I can make it easier
Do - a deer a female deer
Re - a drop of golden sun
Mi - a name I call myself
Fa - a long long way to run
Sol- a needle pulling thread
La - a note to follow so
Ti - a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to Do
Oh Oh Oh

But no, I still don't know how dragon shouts will be used.

Yes I think that this will be the way it will work as well. It will be the same as magic but you do not need it to be linked to one hand to work

I think there will be a menu for this, select the word and see the effect, then save it as a shortcut key.

Oh god no.

I am perfectly fine with pressing a button, they are Using Voice actors for every race and each gender for the Dragon shouts, why do you want to shout over the game with your horrible voice and undermine all the work they did huh? :cryvaultboy:

I'd be too self-conscious to do anything like that, to be honest. I'd feel like an idiot, and I'm not one to go that far into enjoying my game experience.
I'd get plenty of weird looks. :P

So, all the consoles would have to have circuitry that would record your voice, digitize it, send it to the game for comparison to the source files.

A PS2 game did this years ago, so yes, it is indeed possible. Not that I'd like to see it by any means though. Talking to my tv is bad enough when its muttering or raging about lag or idiot team members in online games, let alone talking to my single player game to have it do things.

I tried it out in that PS2 game out of curiosity, never liked it though. It also would be quite problematic for a lot of people too due to varying accents and so forth. The game, by the way, for those curious was SOCOM: US Navy Seals, if I recall the title correctly at least... it was SOCOM at any rate. :P

I assume the shouts will be just like using magic, only without the need to "equip" them to one of your hands. You select whichever shout you want from a menu/list, then press/hold the shout key/button for the shout to activate, hopefully even if you are in the middle of melee combat or throwing magic fire balls.

I've been stalking these forums for days now, but for some reason I have never got around to actually making an account to be able to post. Untill now. This is my first post, and you sir have given me good reason for it. Nice to see a fellow UO player on these forums! I stopped playing the OSI shards when they introduced ninjas and all that trash, but I still play on some free shards now and then..

But on topic: The general consensus is that voice commands are lame and gimmicky, and BSG has never been known to be either of those things. I'm %100 positive that you will select a particular shout from a menu, and a hotkey/button will activate it. And it will not take up a valuable hand, allowing you to wield your weapons/spells of choice while using a Dragon Shout.

Now, time to recall to another thread.
