How To Guide: Run Dosbox as Daggerfall Emulator

Post » Tue Nov 02, 2010 8:15 pm

:) Thank you Jormungandr! It's working.
Thanks Paladin181 for the information, I didn't know that.
Now I'm going to try what you suggested DaGrooved1 :)

There's a 90% chance that's causing your sky problems, if you can't copy them it's probably because of a scratch in the disk, or they're corrupt. If you have a cd burner try putting the cd in that and copying them, as usually cd/dvd burners are better at recognizing files on scratched disks, if that doesn't work I can try to make a zip file of my sky dat files for you.

Dang, my cd burner isn't connected, so can I get that zip file? Thank you.

I'm not sure if this is a DOSbox specific problem or not, so I'll ask here. I'm running DF on DOSbox, and everything has been working perfectly until just recently. Now the problem I'm having is that every time I try to save my game, it crashes out to DOS and tells me that there was an "error writing to disk". Any thoughts? What can I do?

I did what is suggested at the start of this topic, and need some help. Okay, after installation I can run the game, and it works okay, but there is no sound. I have the soundblaster 16 stored, but no sound in game. I also noticed that the opening cutscene never showed up. Anyway, if I try running the dosbox, the screen goes black and nothing ever happens. If I run the game without dosbox, again it runs without ever an opening cutscene, and no sound. Can anyone help?

to bump an old thread, ive recently found that once installed via dosbox, close all programs and open the c:dagger directory.to get windows/dosbox to aknowledge each other (so to speak) run the setup.exe (in windows, not dosbox)that HAS THE WINDOW CLASSIC ICON... not the MSDOS prompt icon. it cured ALL sound problems for me after i realized this.
good luck

A bump too celebrate the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls, and the fact that The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is now a free download.

Why? This thread is incredibly outdated. There was no point to bumping it at all. The original post uses DOSBox 0.63, which is at least four versions behind, if not more.

Unless this is a troll, in which case, congratulations, I guess.

It's also several weeks too late. There are now far better threads on this -- some of them stickied.

Well, resurrecting an old thread is about as close to genuine necromancy as a forum member is ever likely to get. ;)

This is an old thread - but scanning through them all I can't find an answer to my current question.

It is September 2009 and I just got Daggerfall (the game is immortal so I imagine people will be trying to run it another ten years from now). I followed the instructions exactly in the Bethesda PDF. But when I go through the final commands and try to run the game I get the message:

ERROR: looks like you inserted the wrong CD. Please insert your Daggerfall CD in your cdrom and try again.

I have used dosbox for a long time playing other games, so know my way around it, but this has me confounded as I have followed the instructions exactly.

Can someone help or direct me to a thread where this is answered? Thanks.

Open your z.cfg file in your dagger directory. The pathCD line should be as such.

pathcd d:\dagger\arena2\

Your CD drive is correctly mounted, so I don't see what else could be wrong.

Be sure you write the "mount d c:\dosgames\dfcd -t cdrom -label Daggerfall" line correctly. That's -label Daggerfall, not daggerfall or dAGGERFALL or anything else, just Daggerfall.

Thanks Aegis54 and Freddo.

Actually I have long had dosbox and must have messed with the cfg file too much. I deleted my old version and downloaded the latest version of dosbox and it worked. Thanks.

My first hour attempting to play may have turned me off the game though. I started with a dagger and bow, but the only weapon for which attack seems to work is the bow - can't kill the mouse as I rarely hit with my six arrows and always die. If I put any other weapon in my hand - it simply does not swing when I press attack (right mouse button). But I suppose I'll scan other threads for this one.

What wrong?

You're using DOSBox 0.72 and not 0.73. Download the latest release of DOSBox.

You actually need to hold the button down while moving the mouse (usually back and forth for a slashing motion and forward to thrust)

I admit I was a little too excited too "save" an old thread. I forgot too look at the sicky posts. Sorry for being a troll it wasn't meant this way. Sorry.

Yes. I was trying to use it on my laptop with the touch-pad. I attached an external mouse and am underway! Thanks.

Concerning the post above - I am just trying Daggerfall now in Sept 2009 and had a problem. I did a keyword search through the threads and this one was the most helpful. I suspect it will find its way to the top from time to time for this reason.
