Cooking

Post » Sat Nov 27, 2010 6:37 am

It was briefly mentioned by GI that there will be the ability to cook during the game. I wonder how Beth is going to pull that off. Cooking was first introduced in NV, but it was more of a makeshift alchemy than actual cooking. In TES, however, there is already alchemy, and in past games there has been lack of "dishes" in the game as well, so that makes me wonder: what can we cook?

The videos revealed that you can chop up animal carcass to prepare for cooking. Perhaps they'll let you take a piece of meat, some veggies and grains and come up with something called "Cooked Meat" or something, which might replentish your stamina and maybe health.. But I can't see the value of cooking besides straight-up roleplay, because we already have alchemy to provide us potions.

Just a guess that cooking will be part of alchemy. At low levels you can make simple dishes and higher levels make Guar Wellington.

I would really prefer that it was a simple procedure of combining ingredients in inventory and not a mini-game. That should be left to actual alchemy. Nothing over powering, just the use of an open fire source to either bolster first tier effects or remove the negative effects. Place the raw food from inventory on said fire, and wait a few seconds. Remove and enjoy.

Examples:

Raw rat meat. First tier effect is damage fatigue. After cooking the first effect becomes restore fatigue.

Combining water and flour to make bread, or even adding carrots, potatoes, and beef to make a meat pie.

Combining beer or wine with meat, potatoes and carrots to make a stew.

Etc, etc...

Maybe the use of cooking is to conceal the taste of poisons, as poisoning is a feature that gets veter with every game.

Cool! I was hoping for a more thorough use of ingredients outside of alchemy. I've always wanted Oblivion to have a more survivalist feel to it, like if you don't eat you die! :verymad: Hopefully this is what cooking is all about.

Yeah, there must be some reason to cook instead of making a potion. Maybe potions will be made from rarer, magic ingredients and stuff like carrots and bread will only be useful in cooking?

I always wanted to poison food at an inn. Then come back later and see who I killed. Like hunting without the mess!

Food might heal over time, and potions would heal directly.Like fallout new Vegas food helps but it wont replace stim packs.

Well, in several different articles found on the internet, with respect to "Viking Lifestyle," it was reported that Vikings would butcher selected animals in the fall, because in many cases, it was too difficult to feed them through the winters. Meat and fish was usually smoked, salted or dried to preserve it.

The Vikings were more agrarian that some might have realized, with most of them working family, or perhaps even communal farms, and engaging in animal husbandry.

@OnNzOr - Pork was a meat source, and if smoked, I suppose one could have had bacon, lol. Not sure about in-game, however,

In standard houses ( a longhouse) there was usually a hearth, which provided light and some heat. Meat was usually cooked in a pot, with other ingredients, or on a spit, over an open fire.

"Apparently ovens for bread-baking were not widespread, and some investigators believe that leavened, oven- baked bread was developed as an effect of the increasing cultivation of rye in southern Scandinavia."

The souce for the above statement, and for those interested, other information with respect to "Viking Foods" can be observed http://www.vikinganswerlady.com/food.shtml

I'm sure it will be something like in Fallout 3 - collect X ingredients and select what you want to make from a drop down list.

Wouldn't it be cool to have Heavy Rain-esque controller cues in the foodmaking process, though? Hah! I'm sure the developers would have a fun time rendering the many combinations of consumables available in the game!

Yeah I think it will be like a "work table" where you stand there with animations, but you get a screen that lets you combine items to make food with effects/ or potions. (remembering the wines and pie and such). Sounds cool though

It beggers believe they could include cooking, but not refine fast travel or include spears.
