Downloading the Construction Set

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 1:56 pm

Ever since I heard that Oblivion was on PC (yes I used to think that it was an Xbox exclusive), I have always been entranced by mods, the on,y way to improve the (in my opinion) perfect game. However, I have never had a PC powerful enough to run Oblivion, as well as the fact that my only computer that MIGHT be able to is broken. However, having noticed that the Construction Set is available on the website for free, would I be able to download it without owning the game on PC? Because if I can, and this computer can run it (Mac OSX 10.4.11, Tiger, Macbook Black) then I would finally be able to CREATE mods, even if I can't then play them :) So could I, and can my computer run it?

Yes, you can create mods with the CS without owning the PC version. The CS will complain that it can't find a disc in your drive but I can usually click past that and get it to start anyway.

The biggest problem is that you won't be able to test your mod. You'll have to send it to someone with the PC version to see if it works. But good luck! We can always use new modders.

You can download it. It is made for Windows, so you would have to use some sort of emulator to run it (I know they are out there, but do not know the names of anything in particular).

However, without the game, you will not have much content in the CS, aside from the default player and a few items/spells. Everything you make will have to be from scratch. The easiest way to create mods on the other hand, is to take an existing object or spell, change its name, and alter it.

Yes, I completely forgot about that. You're right.

I don't see the point in creating a mod that you can't even use. Even if you do come up with something, you won't be able to transfer it to your Xbox. Mods are PC only. And you'd have absolutely no way to test it to make sure that it actually works.

Damnit, I didn;t know that I would have to create everything from scratch, and I don't have a windows emulator. Guess I'll just have to wait for Skyrim and get that in PC

You could also use Apple's boot camp, but you still need a copy of Windows to install in the boot camp partition. Oblivion will run fine on MacBook Pros with boot camp - not sure about your MacBook though. I don't know the specs for that one. But to modify Oblivion, you need a copy of the game.
