Bethesda, why are you taking the TES out of TES?

Post » Tue Dec 14, 2010 11:30 am

They would've failed whent he legion got involved and the entire questline was about killing necromancers...

Pssh, the pathetic legion dogs couldn't even save the Imperial City from some Daedra. It was up to me to keep Martin's ass safe so he could in turn save us. There are no dragon fires for legions of undead and a demi-god the king of worms (was supposed to be)

Read the back material to Oblivion, it becomes a lot more interesting.

Anyway, it's way past 200 posts.

I am a servant of Chaos, you can easily trust what I say. The dogs are the emperor are the ones spreading rumors and lies to keep all of you as pathetic lapdogs with no brains. Us followers of Chaos, save for those [NUMMIT] Tzeentch cultists and occasionally those who follow Chaos undivided, are very forthcoming and truthful of our intentions and things thereof.

Italian magazine coverage: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1163214-skyrim-italian-coverage-thread-2/

However, it may've been a misunderstanding and/or mistranslation of some sort(?).

in the spanish coverage says that you can enchant objects in some points in the town, (i speak spanish) is not spell making but you still can do that

I've got to say, I think people forget that this game is their job. They need to make money so that the company prospers, and so they don't get downsized. We might want them to cater to the small minority, but I doubt the spouses of the developers would like to hear "We put out a game that the diehard fans love. Where's the newspaper Jobs section?"

It's unfortunate from our perspective, but they have to put out a game that will sell to the silent majority.

Also however, Elder Scrolls has cult status. They thrive on their cult status even if they are making the game more marketable to consumers.

it's been done before... here are the steps of an unsuccessful way to manage cult status in video games

1) start making games that cater more towards the masses, and less towards devoted fans
2) More money is made... so continue making games that cater more to the masses
3)The game eventually passes the critical point where cult fans no longer look forward to new installments of the series
4) losing cult followers doesn't effect the money so much now that there is such a large target market for the game.
5) the games then becomes unoriginal and stale through, and the fickle consumers who the company originally was trying to attain eventually lose interest.

I understand the OP's premise. We all got built up for Oblivion and what did we get? Was anyone truly ecstatic wtih Oblivion? Thank the Gods that I play on a pc and mods could fix it, but for those poor folks on consoles, what were they left with. So, I do understand his premise, based on us getting burned with Oblivion. However, with that said, Beth made Arena which was very well done, DF which was ground breaking for it's time and still is one of the best RPG's ever, then MW, which was still an excellent RPG. They bombed with Oblivion, they read the feedback and I think they address it with Skyrim. I could be wrong, those are just my two cents. I think folks will naturally jump on whatever they can, since they are expecting more challenges like we had with Oblivion. Again, just MHO.

Lies. You speak nothing but lies. And only the purifying wrath of the Emperor, through flame, can cleanse you of your taint!

What part of "Taking the essence of The Elder Scrolls out of The Elder Scrolls" don't you understand..?

What part of you're preaching the same gospel that so many other negative posters on this site don't you understand?

You are a troll, nothing more, nothing less. You've had nothing new to say about anything.
all you've done is stoke the fire that so many others have been keeping lit and the light is blinding the positive people who know
the True Essence of The Elder Scrolls has been "You Are What You Do"

And "Bethesda, why are you taking the TES out of TES? " that is the quote from you that I'm calling out as trolling.

obviously OP was a troll. I mean come on, he said "the TES out of TES" does he not know that he just said the the elder scrolls out of the the elder scrolls?
If he doesnt know what the acronym TES is then hes a troll.

Obviously, OP should report you for calling him a troll, since he clearly isn't one. He's just a guy, like a fair majority of us, who is worried about the fact that TES is just becoming less and less of what it used to be.

Unless you're saying that anyone that criticizes Bethesda is a troll. Which is just a ridiculous assumption.

Anyways, I'm definitely not too happy about all this either. But I think I'll wait till this thread closes, and a new one is made, until I state my full opinions on it.

I will throw my 2 bits in to this volatile pool of malcontent.

The only ES game I have played was Oblivion and I never could get myself to finish it. I have played every other RPG I own to death. The style of game is blatantly repetitive with copy/paste dungeons and shoddy combat AI. I liked a lot of the side quests, but found the whole concept of "being able to do everything in the game with 1 character" to kill immersion and replayabbility. The skills lacked any real depth and none of the fights with NPCs ever made a significant impression (besides taking 5 minutes to kill any generic NPC on the hardest difficulty). Fallout 3 was also difficult for me to finish, but I was able to push myself through the black/white, shallow quests and the feel of mindlessly grinding tons of the same generic NPCs just because it was Fallout.

What I see in Skyrim is that it might have an enjoyable combat system. Skills might be more interesting and character development may actually make sense compared to the atrocity that was Oblivion's system. There could be greater character depth with "perks". That would improve my immersion a lot. What I see that might be negative is the "dragon shouts" and the whole storyline tied to the "dragonborn". Unless they improved their writing staff it will leave me.... uninterested.

I probably should try the older ES games, but if oblivion combat is supposedly "greatly improved" over the previous games I will not be able to force myself to play them.

*on a side note* Someone mentioned The Witcher as a great RPG, but I never could get myself to finish the game. The story was fine, but the combat bored me to tears. I guess I am an action junkie. Although I do find myself having a hard time playing games that have cruddy stories as well, but if the combat is good enough I can usually persevere.
