DISTANCE BETWEEN CITIES

Post » Wed Dec 15, 2010 5:01 pm

OK, I know this has been discuses before but, I've been wondering what is the distance between cities, by the main roads, supposed to be. By my reckoning the distance in the game is way too short, and should have been on the map.

This is what I've come up with.
? Anvil to Kvatch turn off: 60km
? Kvatch turn off to Kvatch city 10km
? Kvatch turn off to Skingrad 80kms
? Skingrad to Imperial City by the most direct roads 120km
? Imperial City to Chorrol 70km
? Chorrol to Bruma by the Orange Road 110km
? Bruma to Red Road north of Imperial City, by the Silver Road 65km
? Cheydinhal to where Blue Road meets Red Road 50km
? Where Blue Road meets Red Road north to were Red Road meets Silver Road 40km
? Where Blue Road meets Red Road south to were Red Road meets Green Road 70km
? Were Red Road meets Silver Road south to were Red Road meets Black Road 60km
? Were Red Road meets Black Road south to were Red Road meets Green Road, by the most direct roads 75km
? Were Red Road meets Green Road south to Bravil 65km
? Bravil south to Leyawiim 125km

How did you come up with that?

The surface area of of the Cyrodiil map is approximately 16 square miles.

Meaning if it were square it would be about 4 miles (6.5 km) per side. Of course it's more rectangular so you can estimate from that. But far, far smaller than the distances above.

I was gonna say, those sound more like Daggerfall distances. Oblivion and Morrowind are based in much smaller places.

I wonder if OP means if this was real life. I don't think those distances sound right either way, though

No I think the OP mean't that the those distances are lore friendly ( real ) values. They don't sound right in game however I believe that they sound right if it were lore

In about 80mins i can run about 12 km and you can make any location in game (on foot) in less then 30min. Based upon my exercise and considering the game character is running as fast as me, we should be looking at area of about 6 km to 8 km square wide. Maybe, the your game character is just running at a unrealistic speed and then my entire caulaction is thrown out.

You've got to remember the scale of the game. It's only 16square miles. I don't know what scale that would be, but it's sure as hell not close to what it would be in the non-game world. For some reason, I think of Cyrodiil about the same size as China.

I don't pay any attention to the game scale from the Construction Set since I find it rather absurd.

Rather, I factor in the time scale I use (10, not the default 30) and the average speed my bowgirl would use while traveling on her mare (4-5 mph). From sunrise to sunset she can cover up to about 50 miles. Leaving at sunrise, she can make it from Bravil to the IC well before sunset. Factoring in delays for waterfall play and bandit attacks, her Cyrodiil is just over 100 miles wide and just under 100 miles high. This scale works beautifully for us and I haven't the slightest hesitancy about taking liberties with the game to suit my purpose. Your mileage may vary.

I based this on what I believe would exist in the real world. Medieval cities had 2000-5000+ people in them, and travel between cities took time. Often days of travel and not something done lightly, for example, London to Nottingham is about 120km, on foot that's 2 days for most people. If Cyrodiil was real the cities would be a lot larger, with 2000-5000 people each, probably 20,000+ in the Imperial City; and they would be a lot farther apart than they appear & the map would be a lot bigger. In my opinion Cyrodiil is about the size of Texas.

That could be. Maybe TES XV will have a world the size of Texas.

But for now things have to be compressed. Just like with Fallout 3, and the Washington DC area. that is far far smaller than the actually DC area.

But they are still fun games.

When in doubt, WALK to Anvil, then to Bruma from Leyawiin @ a timescale setting of one, and you'll get your answer!

Absolutely true about city size and travel in the Middle Ages. I've got some reference books here (can provide names on request) that suggest an average of 3-4 miles (sorry, USian, no kilometers!) a day, 6 for very healthy people, 10 if on horseback, 15 if riding all out (until the horse is lathered) in mail service to a ruler. Bandits were common (not unlike play with MMM), and parties typically traveled safely between towns in groups.

http://www.io.com/~sjohn/demog.htm Note that what he calls "medieval" on this site, we'd call European Renaissance, as the conditions are stable, forests are pushed back, crime isn't rampant, law is centralized, and epidemics are relatively controlled. This pretty much describes the 15th century on, not the period before.

Although Acadian said so above, in Oblivion, this is how you can calculate the land of Cyrodiil. Note that the land size changes depending on what timescale you set it to. And to people who don't know, the timescale regularly is set to 30:1.

It basically means 1 Real Life Day = 30 in Game Days(with no waiting or sleeping). I have it to 10:1.

So this is how you calculate the land of Cyrodiil. This is possible on both console and PC versions. For console, just use the timsecale of 30. This works with all timescales.

1. First determine the speed of your character. It doesn't matter whether or not you ride on a horse. Just use your top running speed or a reasonable running speed if you're using a human or elf character. For horse, just say about 10-20 mph running depending on horse breed.

2. Determine your timescale. Easiest thing to do is to set your timescale to 30.

3. Go to where Chorrol is, then go all the way west until that invisible wall blocks you. Then get a stopwatch or timer or something IN REAL LIFE, then run using your horse or yourself, stopping for nothing, pausing for nothing, run all the way eastwards in as straight of a line as possible until the invisible wall blocks you again.

4. Stop your timer the moment the invisible wall stops you. Then multiply the time you got by 30. Then FINALLY multiply that by the speed you got at step 1. That's the distance from far west to far east. Just use that to base your measurements. If you want, you can do the same thing with north and south.

The surface area of of the Cyrodiil map is approximately 16 square miles.

The Oblivion Construction Set tells us that each exterior cell is 4096 units by 4096 units or 192 feet by 192 feet or 58.5 meters by 58.5 meters. I count approximately 86 cells from Topal Bay south of Leyawiin up to the invisible border north of Cloud Ruler Temple. 192 x 86 = 16,512 feet. 5,280 feet = 1 mile and 3 miles = 15,840. So, north to south, Cyrodiil is approximately three miles long.

I count 104 cells west to east, from Anvil to the invisible border east of Sundercliff Watch. 192 x 104 = 19, 968, or less than 4 miles.

Because the Gold Coast and the southern tip of Cyrodiil are eccentrically shaped there's some guesswork involved but, rounding up the east-west distance to 4 and being generous when assessing the number of cells in the Gold Coast region, I arrive at a total of 9 square miles.

A lot of impressive anolysis. You could be right. I was quoting 16 square miles because it is the generally accepted number. for example:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore_talk:Cyrodiil

And other places.
