A small problem getting the GECK to work.

Post » Wed Dec 29, 2010 8:41 pm

Evening everyone,
Im having a little trouble with the Geck.
Im running Windows 7 if that matters, and Fallout 3 WILL run perfectly for me.
Although, I havent downloaded the latest patch for the Geck.
I havent downloaded a patch for the Geck, its just the vanilla version you download. If that matters.

Not sure if that link embed will work here, if not just follow the link please.
This is the folder in program files that contains Fallout 3, as you can see the Geck is also there.

When I open the Geck, I follow the instructions of the Geck Sub-section off Fallout.gamesas.com.
I open Fallout.esm
Wait for it to load
then save it

Thats where I save it, in the data folder.

Okay, everything is all fine and dandy.
Then I load up the fallout3launcher and select data files to check my New plugin.
Its not there, the only thing there is the Fallout.esm.

What am I doing wrong? :\

Try running Geck on Administrator (Right-Click -> Run as Administrator)
This usually fixes this.
Windows has a few issues with deciding the power the Geck should have, and more than not, locks the file you save. This means only the Geck can have control over it, and so Fallout 3 cannot, so it can't check it. Running as administrator lets windows give the geck full power over the esp files.

Partially correct Elldariin.

If you have Vista or Windows7, AND you installed your game in the default directory, then you will never see the mod in the data folder.

The GECK is NOT part of the game so the OS sees it as a virus or trojan program trying to change FO3 game files. This is not allowed by the OS.

Solution? Pick "one" of these:

1. Install your game to your Root C: drive. Like C:\Games\Fallout3\ or another drive entirely if you have one.
2. Remove the security from your OS and then you can join the XP computer ranks and become a Zombie computer. *Not recommended.
3. In your \Fallout3\Data\ folder, look at the top right. There should be a button called 'Compatibility Files'. Click that to find your mod. You can then copy it from there to your Data folder.
4. Run the GECK in Administrator mode. Right-click on the icon and select, Run as Administrator.
