Spell effects in water...

Post » Sat Jan 01, 2011 6:41 pm

Do you think magic effects should have different effects in water?

These are the effects I really hope will have some cool bonus/side-effects:

- Frost spells
- As soon as the bolt is entouch with water the area freezes, leaving a chunk of ice which will (depending on the magnitude of the spell) melt after awhile, the chunks size should be determined by the area of the spell... those traqed inside the bolt will recieve a small frost damage, and be rendered unable to move, they should also have a chance of contracting one of those diseases you get from being in cold water... the people on the outside of the chunk should only be able to destroy it by: waiting 'till it melts, cast a firespell to speed up the melting, or hit it multiple times with their weapons thus breaking the ice...

- Fire spells
- Should only have an effect if the magnitude is HUGE thus boiling the water dealing a fast and massive damage to everything within it... and if used on/near ice (should help melt it)...

- Shock spells
- Should affect everything within the water...

- Telekinesis spells
- Should allow you to move around a large bubble of water, the bubble should be able to: Put out torches, Stop fireballs if moved infront, if your enamy casts an absorb this water could be moved infront of the bolt, making the casters spell come in contact with water, and finally if the bubble explodes (hit) anything water should splash all over therefor if used timely it could make an enemy freeze him/herself...

- Absorb spells
- First of all I doupt anyone would like this idea... If any absorb spell (absorb magicka, absorb health, absorb fatigue) should hit water the caster should play some animation making your character turn older by seconds and quickly draining his health... if the spells have a long enough duration this may kill your character, the drained health should never return...

Also please post ideas and I might add 'em to the pool...

In all seriousness I like your ideas, but I doubt Bethesda or any other game company for that matter is ready to implement it yet, perhaps sometime in the future.

An ice missile, or burden would be interesting, freezing your enemy and sinking them to the bottom drowning them. The problem is, how exactly does magic work? Apparantly spells have to be spoken, but do they have to be heard? Sound travels twice as fast and as far in water, but would your pronunciation of the spell through the water matter? This is a case for...Lore Man!!!

Nope... if so Silence wouldn't just make you unable to cast... it would make you unable to be affected by any magic...

I don't mean heard by the enemy. I mean why does the spell need to be spoken, what does it do in the world? Does saying the words just upset Magicka in the air or something?

Well... they don't seam that much more impossible to implement than setting oil on fire... it could probably be made with a few scripts...

It's not a big deal but I'm pretty sure it wasn't just a typo unless some extremely bizarre coincidence is involved. >_<

Not being a grammar nazi, just assuming he doesn't know how it's spelled. It's like when you see someone with ketchup on their shirt or something, do you let them go throughout the day with it on or do you tell them so they can wash it off?

Why would you turn older from trying to svck health or magicka out of water? Me confused :S

The rest of the ideas are good.

edit: Ah, I read it again. Twice. ... and I still don't understand. Seriously - what the [censored]? Does water do that to you?

Well not really a typo in that way... but if I have to hurry up writing something I might replace to words which sound familiar... like where and were...

No worries, people on the internet do get too worked up over grammar and spelling when it's not a big deal, and some people aren't native english speakers so it isn't their fault.
I just figured I'd tell you since it seemed like you might now know how it's really spelled.

I get your point, but there should be some input on the thread too then :P Not just pointing out his typo. When pointing out a typo is the 2nd purpose of your post it′s oki, but it′s kinda looked down on if it′s the 1st and only purpose of a post.

The ideas are fun and game companies are getting close....

Ice does freeze water, fire certainly heats water, lightning, well, read on..

The spell system lets you combine and create all of your attack, defense, and other spell powers on-the-fly, drawing from 8 different magicks (Arcane, Life, Water, Fire, Earth, Lightning, Cold, and Shield) which can be combined in a nearly limitless fashion. To cast a spell, you create it by combining up to 5 of the 8 magicks (pressing the corresponding keyboard keys) before unleashing the final product (right-clicking). Because you’re doing this in the heat of battle, you need to be quick in your spell creation and casting.

According to Pilestedt, each of the magical elements combines and reacts with one another to create roughly 5000 different effects. More importantly, spells affect you, your team mates, and enemies equally. Friendly fire isn’t an option, it’s inevitable.

For example, if you combine Earth and Shield, you will create a wall of stone that erupts from the ground. If you combine Fire and Water, you’ll create a blast of steam. And if you combine water and lighting, you’ll electrocute yourself and probably die horribly.

And the list goes on. In my first game, I brilliantly managed to electrocute myself because I tried to cast lighting while my character was wet. Later, I inadvertently cast Life upon my sword, which created a devilishly clever weapon that healed the monsters struck with it.

Magicka

Mostly designed for co-op play but solo looks possible up to a point. There is a free demo on steam (or should that be fire+water right click? hehe) so well worth a play :)

Oh yes, if you do get wet, use fire on self to dry, lol

Never tried Bioshock but I wrote that fire should have an effect on ice... either you meant something different or else you must have missed it...
