Fallout 3 and Win7-64Bit

Post » Tue Jan 04, 2011 3:13 am

Heyas. Um, is there a way to get FOMM, FOMOD, and FOOK2 to run on Win7 64 bit? When I install the game, it works fine, but when I install the mods (Also install fine) the moment I try to launch the game, I get a black screen for a moment, then a CTD and nothing. Any help appreciated, thanks :)

The Mods FAQ in this forum suggest installing outside the default folder (UAC). CTD on launch sounds like a missing master... make sure required dependencies of mods you have are all activated.

Mods on Windows Vista

Installing mods on a Windows Vista system is bit trickier than it is on Windows XP due to Vista's increased security.

For best results, it is recommended to install Fallout to a location other than the default C:\Program Files\ folder. Another location such as C:\Fallout 3\ or D:\games\Fallout 3\ will work better. This will avoid the file permission problems many users have experienced due to the increased security restrictions Vista places on the Program Files folder.

I have windows 7 64-bit and I mod, and use mods no problem. The CTD on game start is due to a missing master. Look at all your mods and see which one is missing. Thats all.

There are other issues that cause CTD on start too, incompatible display setting, and the "invalidate older files" crash atleast. It's most likely a missing master, though. And i too play on x64 Windows 7 with no problems.

I am on W7 64 bit and had some issues. Pintocat is correct, you can get some permission issues if you install in the default location. If you have done this and don't want to go to the trouble of reinstalling, then right click on whatever you are using as your launcher and select Run as Administrator. This applies to any program that needs read/write in the Program Files folders.

Ok, cool. I'll try reinstalling in a nonstandard location, see if that fixes things :) As for missing master, I'll head to the FAQ and see if I can figure out what you all mean lol.

Some mods contain master files, with the extension .esm. These must be loaded before the plugin files (.esp). If a required master file is missing, it will cause the game to crash before main menu. Download and run http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10193, it gives you suggested load order, and will warn you if a master file is missing.

As well as instant 'lots of unwanted programs changing stuff on your computer'. Only disable UAC if you have adept computer skills and can identify issues without your computer having to warn you of them.

Even then its not advised to turn it off because it can catch a lot of background things you otherwise would never see.

The UAC isn't that big of a deal if you learn to just deal with it. Realize it is trying to protect your computer and not try and annoy you, even if the latter is happening.

It actually is meant to annoy you according to MS' own http://tech.slashdot.org/tech/08/04/12/006242.shtml ;)

Still, it shouldn't be disabled unless you seriously do know what you're doing.

Crashing on load can also be a sound driver problem. If you have evil, evil things like Creative's ALchemy installed then it absolutely will cause both Oblivion and Fallout3 to crash on load. Realtek's 3DSoundBack and Asus' equivalent will do the same.

UAC is for the people that do not want to know whats going on in their machines. I would say also to turn off UAC. But I suppose its how much you know of the goings on in your machinery =)

Then you apparently know nothing about what the UAC is, cus then you would know that it does tell you everything thats going on, just about.

As said before, it is not advised to disable it unless you know more then average about computers.

Then again, my "above average" is being able to purposely install a virus, then remove it with no ill effects.
