Ingredients in Skyrim

Post » Tue Jan 11, 2011 12:03 pm

After the funny, hard-to-spell ingredients in Morrowind and even the traditional fantasy ones of Daggerfall, I found many of the more mundane alchemical ingredients in Oblivion to be somewhat lacking. You can invent a magical flower or mineral and tell me that it has magical properties, but seeing "bread has no effect on you" is kind of jarring after a while. So what sorts of ingredients do you think we'll see in Skyrim?

I'm hoping for a mix of Oblivion's realistic crops and herbs along with some unique new items, preferably with the latter being far more potent. I don't know if a watermelon should be able to produce light: perhaps such ingredients should only function as "complementary" additions to potions, but incapable of having a base effect on their own?

I'm interested to see if there is a abundance of daedric alchemical ingredients. In the Infernal City it mentions there being a huge influx during/after the Oblvion crisis and still going on while the Infernal City takes place (50 years after OB) so I wonder if they will still be common in shops during Skyrim (200 years after OB) or if they will have hit uncommon but not rare again.

Old Pete Hines loves Alchemy. So, I think we can safely say it will be awesome. :D

I would like to see more ingredients to be honest.
We may see real one's from scandanavian countries, but i want others aswell, like what was in shivering isles etc.
Also i would like to see ingredients that you get from lakes, rivers ,sea etc.
Sea-weed,jelly ( jelly fish ),shells, allsorts of underwater stuff...would give more of a reason to venture there.
Aswell as more sea creatures :)

Even Morrowind had bread, though, it's just that real ingredients were far outnumbered by made up ones due to the nature of its environment. The large amount of real life ingredients in Oblvion were a natural concequence of its gameworld having a less exotic design than Morrowind's, which was reflected in its flora and fauna, thus, when Shivering Isles went for a more alien feel again, we got lots of strange ingredients again. However, in Skyrim, I expect that, once again, the majority of ingredients will be more like ones you might find in real life, although hopefully they'll be designed with Skyrim's cold climate in mind. Skyrim does not exactly strike me as a place that will be as alien as Morrowind, unfortunately, and the screenshots I've seen so far haven't done anything to change my mine on that matter.

I don't mind the standard bread-and-butter ingrediants (Hehe, it needed to be said), but I do hope there are some bizarre ingrediants to make things interesting. Oblivion had the Daedric realm to give us some exotic ingrediants... Skyrim has dragons? I have faith they'll find a way to break up the monotamy of a snowy landscape, which also implies new plants in those different areas.

I would also like to pick the different leaves and bark from different tree's.
Scrapings of gold, moss, bark, metals ( various ),skin, fur, dragon bone, dragonscales, mammoth tusks loads of stuff.
Hell i would even like to use snow/ice as an ingrediant too.
The list is endless really.

I'm all for real ingredients and real effects.
I like watching Bear Gylls and learning about how you can use Aloe Vera for cuts or pine-needles for tea.

Magic effects should be exclusive to magic ingredients.

alot of ingrediants in MW were real; heather, comberry, marshemarrow (which was just a generic name for marsh reeds)

but yeah, there were things like trama root. what I would like to see is some potions that could be used as weapons, like exploding vials. that way alchemist type charicters could be more useable in combat.

I am expecting mods to fill in any and all ingredients that are from previous games.
