Changing an item's equipment slot

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 1:40 am

I would like to know how I can change a hat that i recently downloaded from using the hair slot to the amulet slot. I have tried opening the item details in the CS and changing it under where it says "biped object" and when I try to play I equip it but nothing shows up on my character. What should I do?

Once I'm finished I'll talk to the original creator about posting the updated file on The Nexus.

The usual problem with the amulet slot is that a lot of armor and clothing items are set to "Hide Amulet", so you won't see anything when those are equipped. Another option is tail slot, but then you really need to make two versions (one for beast races that doesn't remove their tail, and the other for everyone else). Wrye Bash has an option for allowing rings and amulets to be visible at all times, but that gives you odd clipping effects when the items really do overlap.

I don't know if anyone has done any work with NifSE in dynamically merging head adornments, but that may be where this problem needs to go.

Ok right I completely forgot about the hide amulet setting. I will try that again and hopefully it will work.

Thanks for your help. I probably would have been stumped forever because I have zero modding experience outside of the CS so I assumed it was something in the mesh file.

Actually I just tried that and it still didnt work. I removed my shirt and equipped the hat and it didnt show up. After that I equipped an amulet and It showed up fine but the hat still wouldn't. If I look at my inventory list it says its equipped but there is no sign of it on my person. And I double checked the .esp and it is set to amulet so im still stumped.

Did you change anything else, like a new texture? That can make an item invisible if the texture is unintentionally totally transparent, or the normals face the wrong way, or....

Also, can you check that the hat is really replacing any amulet by having the character equip one, and then put on the hat. The amulet should be removed when the hat goes on, even if the hat is invisible.

I havent changed anything except the equipment slot. And I did equip an actual amulet and it did unequip the hat. I then changed it to use the tail slot and the same thing happened. When I equip another tail item it unequips the hat. I havent done anything with the .nif file.

I just tried changing it back to the hair slot and it works just how is it supposed to (my hair and ears are gone, but thats normal with a hair slot replacement) I also tried the head slot and my head disappears and my hat is sitting sideways covering what would be my left ear if my head was still there.

Wait a minute, how do you know the hat is sideways if you can't see it? Is it visible in some of these configurations?

Its visible only when set to equip in the hair and head slots. When equipped to the hair slot (where it was designed to go) it shows up like it should, but when equipped to the head slot my head disappears but I can see the hat, but the hat is sideways over my left shoulder.

OK, it's starting to make sense. I seem to remember that hair is not rigged to the skeleton, but gets its position data another way. The other equipment all gets rigged to one of more bones of the skeleton, and will be positioned by them. The hat may have to make a trip into MAX or Blender to get some bone weights.

If I'm remembering correctly hair can be morphed to fit the shape of the head, so it can't have skeletal animation as well. Some hats are hair-like and conform to the head shape, and some hats are rigid, and skeleton-rigged. The latter ones will adjust equipment slot without anything but the CS change, but the former won't. It's possible to change a mesh to the other type, but that needs the modelling tool and/or conformulator.

Incidentally the same thing happens with hair, and you'll see "wigs" that are hair that moves with the body (generally used for long styles) and regular hair that morphs (generally short). Both go in the Hair slot, but they don't work the same way.

Ok. Thanks for your help. Thats getting into stuff I know nothing about so ill probably just leave it alone. Theres no reason to learn how to mod oblivion now when TES5 will have a new engine... Unless TES5 is just bad which I seriously doubt.
