How do I make a follower?

Post » Fri Feb 11, 2011 1:44 pm

What the title says. I attempted to make a follower using FoxtrotZulu's instructions but when I went in game it didn't work. I'm dunno, but I'm sure it had something to do with the final scripting part that was supposed to be "very easy". I put in the scripting stuff he said to do but everything in the end came out invalid. Do I have to do all of that or is there a simple way to have someone follow you?

90% of follower creation is the ai packages, and you can just look at a vanilla followers' and copy them. The script is just there to hold variables used by the packages for the most part, and faction add/remove if you want to have them fireable and hireable.

I mostly used one of Pistolero's follower mods as a reference guide (taking screens of important areas) and sometimes just poked around one of the vanilla followers if I didn't understand something. Although the best tutorial I found (besides seeing how someone else did it) was http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5506. I'd read through others but they had errors or were just incomplete. I'm not new to making companions so knew when something wasn't set up right.

IMO best way to learn is to see how someone else did it. If you have a favourite follower mod just pull it apart :hehe:

Thankyou to both, and thanks for the link.
Thanks for the info on the script thing, pintocat. Didn't know that.

I agree with this. The vanilla followers are a great place to start to get an idea of how the basic structure of what you will need works (object script, a few packages and some dialogue to keep that all running and to add flavor), but they lack an awful lot. Vanilla followers don't even have sandboxing packages. Plus, different modders do things differently. You'll learn a lot looking through other mods. Although it may be confusing at first.
