How Long Will it Take For TES V Modding To Really Take Off?

Post » Fri Feb 11, 2011 6:13 am

I just wanted to know what the community thought. I arrived to Oblivion late (around 2008) and Oblivion PC even later (halfway through 2009) so I've been blessed with having access to all the really great mods that came out since it's release (Open Cities, Hem's Capes, Obscuro's Overhaul, CM Companions, and the Dwemer Skyship, to name just a few). I know that Bethesda offers really great tools and support to modmakers, but even so, how long do you think it will take them to create mods that are really great?

I don't understand the question at all. You just told us some mods you think are really great, and now are asking us when we think people will make mods that are really great.

Uh...TES IV is Oblivion, and if you're waiting for the modding scene to "take off"- you're late.

He most likely means TES V.

Well, it really depends on what the engine is capable of. If its as powerful as Todd claims it will be, I think we'll be seeing some pretty spectacular mods.

If TESV is as bugged as Oblivion was then you can likely see the first mods pop up mere hours after release.

Wasn't Oblivion's first mod a dialogue fix?

For really great mods? Probably a few weeks (or months) after people get the CS. If somebody gets an idea... there isn't going to be much stopping them from doing it.

:D

Personally, I'm working on improving myself for TES:V modding. It's gonna be kinda hard to make models/textures that are 2010 Quality. :ahhh:

My first mod will probably be a home, if it's good I'll probably upload it. So, I'd say (if there's a CS) mods will appear within the first two weeks. People are going to want to beat the MQ, Guilds, and do side-quests before they start modding.

Yeah, I meant TESV modding, but improperly typed TESIV. Sorry for the confusion.

Topic title fixed.

A lot of the first mods I noticed for TES IV were "annoyance fixers". Mods that toned down the level-scaling, mods that removed pop-up messages, etc. In Fallout 3 modding, I saw quite a few mods that reduced XP gains to protract the gaming experience, or altered the way healing items worked. Tweak mods will no doubt account for a large percentage of mods in the early stages of TES V modding. But that's only if the tools are there in the first place.

After the initial flurry of "fixes", it really will depend on what TES V offers, and inspires in the imaginations of modders. It's rather difficult to estimate the time frame of something so at the mercy of something as temperamental as a Muse.

With FO3 people were coming out with mods even before the cs kit came out. Most were skin swaps, weapon tweaks etc. And let us not forget the early boob mods. I would bet TES5 loses its underwear within a month of launch.

I'd say the first mods will be ready in just a few hours after release.

I hope not. :( I wanna see more mods about adding things other than clothing/body models... "sigh".

I believe your confusing the release time of Fallout 3. They intentionally released the GECK a little while before the game released, if I recall correctly. I believe they did the same with Oblivion.

The GECK didn't come out until December of 2008. IDK when Oblivion's CS came out.

We know it exists. The folks at Bethesda recently said they had a TES V build that they are very happy with and intend to reveal soon.

Actually you're right, it's just speculation, but I'm pretty convinced that they're working on it now. What it actually said was that they had a build of their next title, whether TES or not.

From UESP:
Spoiler
Production

It is speculated that Bethesda started full development of The Elder Scrolls V after the completion of Fallout 3. From previous quotes by Todd Howard, it is suspected that preproduction work for TESV took place during Fallout?'s development. At one point, there was news that pointed towards a 2010 release date; however, that appears to be false, as the game has not been announced, and a 2010 release date would leave little time for promotion of the game. The 2010 date was always regarded as questionable, since Fallout 3 used the same basic engine as Oblivion, and still required 31 months of development time (the 2010 date allowed for a maximum of 26 months). It is important to note that Bethesda has announced that there will be no more downloadable content for Fallout 3, which indicates that Bethesda is increasingly focusing their developers on their next standalone game release.

On April 27, 2009, Pete Hines was quoted by IGN as saying that no new Elder Scrolls title was expected to be announced "anytime soon." This was done along the announcement of the Elder Scrolls novels to be penned by renowned fantasy author Greg Keyes. The announcement is ambiguous, and no more specific details were given. The interview can be found here.

In a more recent interview for Gamasutra dated June 25th, 2009, Hines let slip that "On the flip side, Todd [Howard] and his team have their hands full with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout." This suggests that some new Elder Scrolls title, be it Elder Scrolls V or a spinoff along the vein of Redguard and Battlespire, is in production in some capacity. That interview can be found here

As Antibody pointed out in the speculation thread where we squashed this myth, that's Pete simply referring to the 2 big titles that BGS works on. That in no way mentions them working on titles RIGHT now. He's just saying that Bethesda Game Studios has it's hands full with the two big IPs that it currently has.

I'd kinda like to see another game in the Adventures series myself.

IDK when Oblivion's CS came out.

Before the game was released. I remember several of us studying it to find out clues about what might be in the game.
