Weapons for a Crusader

So I wonder what weapon you think is best suited for a Crusader/Paladin? I can't decide and I need a weapon for my Crusader.

Do you have the Knights of the Nine DLC? If so, use the mace or the sword.

In my head the classic weapon for a crusader is a longsword. I choose that because he′s also in need of a shield so no claymore, that weapon is more for heavily armored knights fighting in an army

To me, a mace seems to be the best weapon for a crusader, probably because the class picture has one wielding a mace.

To me a longsword would suit a crusader.

Err on the warrior side, got to be the old classic sword and board, err on the priestly side, got to be a mace, unless you play warhammer, when a crusading priest uses, that's right a warhammer.

While he may have also used other weapons like an mace or lance, every knight had an arming sword. It was the weapon of the warrior aristocracy of every culture that used them. It took more time and skill to forge them than other weapons, making them works of art as much a utilitarian tools. Also, other weapons have uses outside of warfare, the bow, spear, axe, etc, are used for hunting, wood working, and so on... The sword is only used for killing people. This makes it a naked statement of military power. Even now the sword is still part of the ceremonial uniform of officers. So I say go with the longsword.

I say your Crusader should smite evil with a fearsome two handed claymore!

Unfortunately, stats-wise the game does favor a one handed sword and shield. But note that if you equip an enchanted shield and use a Claymore (or other two handed weapon) then you still get the shields enchantment (but not the base armor rating)

I voted "other". Traditional medieval / Renaissance holy knights probably would have used the big sword or mace (just like they do in the movies), but they could have wound up using any of the choices on that poll if they absolutely had to. Like Subrosa was saying, the sword took more skill than the others to master effectively. It usually cost the most money to make.

Back in Dungeon & Dragon days, playing a Paladin meant using any weapon EXCEPT the stealthier ones. A paladin wasn't supposed to go sneaking around. The whole idea of the paladin in the original D&D handbooks was that they'd attack while letting their enemy know that they were there representing their God or Goddess.

If the Paladin won initiative (which means he/she gets the first move) the enemy was often given a choice to surrender, assuming it could understand the Paladin's language. "Surrender, or fall at the foot of the Gods!" or whatever. All paladins in the original D&D were Lawful Good, but lately in the latest editions of the game, they can be any alignment (which cheapens the game in my opinion, but whatever).

So a paladin wouldn't use a blowgun, or sneak up with a poison-tipped daggar, or use a bow from long distance. Such sneaky attacks were considered unethical to the Paladin's cause.

Nothing says holy righteousness like smashing infidels and heretics into a greasy paste with a massive two-handed Warhammer. Listen not to their pathetic cries for mercy for they have placed their faith in a false god. Now their souls can only be purified through holy fire and the just application of extreme and disfiguring violence. Go forth and bless their blasphemous heads with your divine instrument of virtue.

I voted for a Claymore, but a heroic figure would favor a two hander to smite thier enemies.

In my opinion, long sword. Along with a shield. Elegant, aristocratic and lethally effective.

If you are going for a more realistic look, I believe an actual crusader would traditionally use a long blade or 2 handed blade. If you are going for more of a romantic high fantasy feel, I would definitely choose a warhammer. Overall I would play with the warhammer, so I can crush my enemies beneath the weight of their own impurities . . . figuratively speaking that is.

I would imagine you wanting to go for the best longsword you can find; a fine steel longsword if you have no problem in using lower-quality weapons. Alternatively if you have the KotN plug-in, you can use the mace or sword, as that's your best bet.
