Sliders vs Presets

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:56 pm

Character creation...One of the most important things of RPG's.You'll be creating the PC you'll relate to and play as the whole game.
On this day, this is pretty much done with sliders as in Oblivion or Mount&Blade. Theoretically it sounds good since every NPC would be created the same way, everyone's face being different than eachother.

However,in Oblivion it felt like everyone looked the same.Seriously, make everyone bald and one color, and let's see you recognize your favourite NPC by looking at the face.
In Morrowind,we had presets and you could find guys having exactly have the same face as you of course, and take a photo.Still,at least you could guess who was who even though they were one color, bald and naked.

So,what do you think is the way to go?
Are the presets the way to go even though there is a chance that you'll encounter your twin?
How should the sliders be so that they actually create differences -without creating the ugliest thing on Nirn-?
Or third option -I never used character creation so it should be removed anyway?-

There are presets AND sliders. We'll probably get a ton of different options. Overall facial structure, noses, eyes, hair, skin tone, jaw, mouth, etc etc, and then, after all of those choices are made, we'll be able to mess with the sliders for individual changes. Factor in facial tattoos and scars, and I'd say there's a very small chance of meeting an exact twin.

Sounds much like character creation in Sims 2 and 3. I think it made it easier to make the character look like I wanted, far easier than in Oblivion where it was hard.
Basically you have elements like face shapes, noses, eyes, moths and perhaps jaws you pick and then start tweak. Beast races would need their own groups and orcs would probably need some specials.
Totaly difrent than Morrowind where you chose between ready made heads. oblivion had this with random who cycled trough a lots of faces.
Hopefully we will be able to modify ears.

I'm expecting something a lot closer to Dragon Age's character appearance kit, which is frankly infinitely preferable.

From what I heard, I interpited the character creation to be similar to DA:O in where you have presets but you can edit those presets with sliders and such and produce an eventually unique character.

It'll be similar to Mass Effect and Dragon Age style Character Creation but with even more options that'll blow both those systems out of the water.

I hope that we have the option (as in Mass Effect 2) to generate a code that can be entered into the game can translate into a face. Not only does it save a little time if you want to reset the character to a face you like, but the community can share faces without having to resort to mods (particularly useful for the console players). Ideally, it would be resistant to breaking if mods or DLC introduced to add new character appearance options; but, I'd settle for something that would work in vanilla.

there will probably be a hybridization of sliders and charges
if they implement a system where you can chose it from a list of parts, but you can also customize things like skin tones

Either the Podcast or a mag review recently released said we wont have as much of a robust customization as was in Oblivion, I guess its akin to Fallout 3 where there were less sliders, I circumvented that by making my own presets in the CS/Geck.

Sounds as though we're getting both. This pleases me.

I hope they have peculiar versions too. Like being able to recognize someone because of a certain facial attribute (like a bent nose).
