Oblivion Play Style

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:31 pm

Alright first let me say I have oblivion for xbox 360 =-) so no mods lol.. But I have been trying to find exciting new ways to play this game which I half to admit that keeps me playing all the time and yes I got this game on release date and still play it faithfully lol. I was just wondering what your playing style is and how you role-play. Here or some of my ideas please share yours.

Here is my play style/Role-play

No fast travel (walking/riding every where gives the game a sense of time for me )

No waiting to heal health (The only time I break this role is if I find a sleeping bag in a fort or a bed I can sleep on)

No waiting for Fatigue (I carry food around such has watermelon, potato pies and other food to restore my fatigue. After a battle you half to rest and eat cause you used all that energy fighting lol)

No Music (I play with no music cause I love the feeling of exploring and being scared of whats around the corner. In real life battle music is not going to come on when a enemy is going to attack especially if you can't see them gives you that scare every once in a while when i goblin jumps out of no where and attack you or a bow Bandit is shooting you and you do not know where they are at lol

I create a background and a set of rules my character based on morals(rather than in-game things like fast travel. I'm not very hardcoe when it comes to roleplaying) like never murder or don't join certain guilds.
I usually cap my magia resistance to either 50 or 40 %(Breton or no Breton).
I use armor that fit the character I'm playing(no daedric for my Crusader for example).

It is my belief that roleplaying should be about the character, not the player. Anyone who uses the word "I" when speaking about their gaming is not roleplaying. We begin to roleplay, in my opinion, when we speak of "he" or "she," (or, in my case "we").

I roleplay a little differently than most. I think of myself as a kind of guide or companion tagging along behind my character on her adventures. I offer suggestions about what to do and where to go, I warn of possible dangers, etc, but it is my character who makes the final decision.

Some of my characters fast travel, some don't (I view map-based fast travel as a form of magic so my magic-oriented characters tend to fast travel while my non-magic-oriented characters do not); some use potions, others do not; some do Alchemy, others do not. A roleplayer's rules should depend on the character. To me, roleplaying is making a different set of rules for each character.

My recent characters tend to be pretty independent, and often insist on going about their business in ways that won't profit them long-term. I know where there are items available which would make their life a lot easier, but they don't, and they don't listen (I'm just a nagging voice in the back of their heads, after all.)

I use a mod that adds editable map markers for places like wayshrines and runestones, and in my little imagined Tamriel, it is possible to teleport between such places of power. So my characters can teleport from one Ayleid Well to another, or from one runestone to another, etc. There is no "fast travel" between cities.

My characters also tend to be disinclined to get involved in the big quest lines. They may join one of the guilds to avail themselves of services, but they aren't generally interested in guild business. Except when they turn around and surprise me. :)

I use a mod that can start characters in various locations around Cyrodiil, and delays the Main Quest. This makes it easy to drop a character into the world in a place of my choosing (or a random location), so it allows the characters to start out in a way which is consistent with their "story." Once they are in the world, I try to keep a light hand on the "controls," and let the character develop.

I have played where I become my characters on occasion. Not so with my current character. We have traveled together for over two years now and she is quite immersed in her world. Although she lives with several curses I have inflicted upon her (she cannot raise endurance or strength for example), her behavior and habits are a matter of her choice. She is a no-melee mystic archer. Her story is mostly about the decisions she makes as she lives her long elven life in Tamriel, but I have observed quite a few interesting behaviors and habits as she goes about her business. Here are just a few:

She changes clothes probably a dozen times a day and although not modest (she is a wood elf after all), she prefers not to make a scene when she changes in public. Therefore, she does so with a shroud of invisibility.

When she checks the fallen bodies of her foes, she squats by them (sneak) and casts a spell so she can see and try to cut her arrow free (light + summon dagger). After she searches the body and her messy business is done, she dispels the effects.

She insists on taking extravagant care of her precious black mare, not only providing the best of care but never traveling without her. In fact, via a powerful spell of waterwalking, even lakes and rivers do not separate them.

Naturally, she eats, sleeps, bathes and all that other mundane stuff that life requires.

The only weapon she carries is her bow, which she has enchanted and named Slayer. She has found that the most arrows she can squeeze into her quiver is 25, but she does carry a spare quiver full in a magic bag she has, and even more arrows in her mare's saddlebags.
Although she is not materialistic (except for clothes), she is very devoted to her guild of mages and any items she finds that are truly artifacts, she turns into the Mystic Archives. The only artifact she carries is the Star of Azura.
