trouble installing daggerfall

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:07 am

My computer literacy is fairly basic but I have managed to download and unzip the game and patch to a dosgames folder (this seemed to work fine without using 7zip although I have that now). Dos Box 0.73 works fine and is pinned to the start menu. I am running vist 32-bit i think. Having followed the original Pdf instructions I have got to the point where the game begins to install. Things look promising for about 10-15 seconds then DosBox returns saying error unable to create file font/0000.fnt.

I have searched the forum before posting and found someone with a similar error but his query seemed to be ignored. I have tried downloading J.kings dosbox helper which at first doesnt find dosbox even though it isn't exactly hidden which doesn't instill confidence. After I let the helper download it's own version and run it the dos box window appears for about a second then disapears completely.

Any help would be appreciated I am desperate to play the game after all these years. My copy got scratched beyond playability, sent it off to be repaired by disk doctor and it came back snapped!

I never used Vista, but I belive you have to run DOSBox as an administrator in Vista for it to work properly when it comes to writing files?

Good point. When I was moving files around I had to use the admin password, I will try again on the admin login. thanx

Vista gets cranky when you put files anywhere outside your user folder. In my case it would be something like c:\users\Aliotroph, so my dosgames folder (if I had one) would be "c:\users\Aliotroph\dosgames." That kind of arrangement just works better on Vista. On my Vista system my game installs were typically things like c:\users\Aliotroph\games\Oblivion, or c:\users\Aliotroph\games\DAGGER, etc.

In DOSbox that means the mount command becomes "mount c c:\users\Aliotroph\games".

Thanks guys that was sound advice, got it working. It did show a lot of scrambled colours so I had to change the output in dos box to open GL. Vista seems to be very user sensitive, even the config file for dos box is saved in different variations in each user area. Where it screwed me up was it asked for the administrator password to install the zip file but from then on didn't give me a clue as to why it was refusing my installation.
