Ridiculous Assignments

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:51 am

My buddies little brother is going to some college for advertising. Apparently a lot of their work involves pitching ideas, which require sketching out (quickly their ideas. Their prof said that their type setting skills (writing text) svck..so shes making them write out the alphabet 120 times at a 24 pt. Times New Roman all caps, another 120 for lower case, and another 240 times in some other font.

I told him to tell his brother to scan in an initial trace, photocopy it and color it in to save time...other than that hes in for a world of pain.

Have you guys ever had any ridiculous assignments? School? work? anything.

None really come to mind for me.

In eighth grade, there was a group project where we had to write about the ten most important events in history, that would be submitted for some contest. A month of work and a twelve page paper later, we find out that all of our work was for nothing. We didn't even get a grade on the project like we were supposed to.

A two page essay on pecans, 12 recipes involving pecans broken down into the four categories of cakes bars pastries and some other baked item, plus it had to be presented in magazine format with the cover page, table of contents, essay, recipes, and references all in magazine format.

I have a slight disdain for pecans now.

Last Semester I took an art history class and got a 5/160 points on the final.

However noone else did any better and there was a student action filed against the professor who was subsequently relieved from duty.

The whole class was just insane, about half way through I kinda could tell something wasnt right so I just quit. Looks like I was right.

What exactly was wrong?

Anyway, I've had plenty of crazy assignments, they must be repressed memories or something since I can't remember a single one.

I haven't had too many ridiculous assignments in college yet, and I think I'm fortunate to have mostly the better professors. Now I also know some professors to avoid from what I've heard others say in class too.

I found school assignments to be ridiculous/bizarre from when I was in school before college though, and I thought the school I was in was weird.

Had a bad one last week. My slightly psychotic English teacher had us write only the body paragraphs of a Hamlet essay as a 1 day assignment. It was ridiculous because a) why write only the body paragraphs and not the intro and conclusion, and b ) the body paragraphs for an 10 page paper is 8 or so pages. In one night...

The class was a required course for graduation and considered a 200level course. However the detail and amount of material plus being an online course, it honestly felt more like something that wouldve been a doctorate program. I mean it WAS THAT HARD. Im very smart, and I can learn just about anything, but that class was just so... INSANE noone couldve passed any test on it... as in we had tests that were scaled by 40-60points regularly. No joke.

Once we had to read a book by the name of Walden; Or Life in the Woods by Henry David Thoreau and write an essay. We had plenty of time to do so, but that book was utter crap. For all the supposed greatness of these pieces of literature we read, some of them genuinely svck and are just a waste of time (Say what you're trying to say instead of dragging on and wasting my time, if you can't keep a full-length book detailing what you're saying interesting!). Also, my AP U.S. History Teacher just gives us unusually large amounts of homework... and by unusually, I mean unusual by AP standards.

I had a maths teacher who when at university was required to write an essay on the six life of a ping pong ball.

I reckon I could totally do that for a creative writing class, except this guy was studying psychology.

Dumbest assignment ever would be any communications 101 assignment. Horrible class dumbest ideas. Seriously it was all about pop culture and I have very little interest in the current episode Jersey Shore, my TA didn't even know half the terms and read from powerpoint slides anyways. I think I logged 15 hours in Fallout NV on my laptop during just that class.
