Description:
===============
Ever wanted to put your high science skill for hacking terminals to more use?
Well now you can.
I had wanted to create something similar to the old Shadowrun sega game where
you can sell data to a vendor.
Upon loading up this mod, there will be a new map marker available near Springvale. A mysterious man named "Phantom" has an office there.
You will be able to talk to him and find out that he has hacked into some old
satellites and has a terminal set up outside if you want to help him gather the data, he will buy the data(in the form of holodisks) from you.
You can only gather 1 holodisk of data per session, as the link will disconnect you after each use. (this allows for it taking you a little time to mine the data and sell one at a time to Phantom)(you can drop them on the ground after each turn at the terminal and gather them if you wanted, but keep in mind he only has a certain amount of caps every 3 days the caps on him refresh just like any other vendor)
This mod gives smart science/computer type people a job in the wastes.

Notes:
I would love to somehow implement a "matrix" type system ala "neuromancer" or "shadowrun" where you can buy cyberdecks and "jack in".
Possibly transports you to a cell randomly where there are different nodes you can attempt to hack and gather data right in cyberspace. Fighting AI's etc.
(of course i'd probably need help with such a thing...lol)

I don't have the time to help you, but you could look into how Tranquility Lane is handled in the default game. You could add weapons based on the Science skill that could be unlocked by your deck. Similar with armor.

That is a supremely awesoem idea. I could setting up a couple dozen cells with various "digital monsters" you need to fight. There was an older mod that gave psionic powers to your character, maybe you could use those weapons/attacks to reflect your science hacking powers when "in the machine"

Does this mean there is only one computer that you can hack into (i.e. the one outside?). It would be super awesome if a global script could be developed that let you export/save data from any hacked terminal onto your "deck" and sell it to Phantom as well.

All great ideas!
I will work on this, may take some time but worth doing I think. Mez if you want/can help i'd be all for it.
Currently yes, there is just the one computer outside Phantom's to data mine from. I agree it would be better to have a global.
Things to work on and expand upon indeed :)

Maybe you could use some of these idea's in your "Down Under" mod, the computer in there does seem like it has attained a certain level of awareness. This would also be a way that you could communicate with the rest of the world to see what they are doing. or who has survived. You could even go as far as to tap into some security camera somewhere to see how things are in the commonwealth. Just an idea though.

If you continue the down under mod maybe an expansion could include gathering some data and equipment for a "cyberjack" type of device. The cyborg perk could allow you more access than normal.

I saw the word "Decker" and my mind went racing through all the Shadowrun experiences I've had, I'm glad that this was exactly what I thought it would be. Sadly I never realised that a Shadowrun videogame was made, I may have to invest in an old Sega. The idea about the pods is very intruging. Perhaps some data could be culled from the normal computers in the game but add some more pods in the wasteland that transport the character into the matrix. Adding the pods doesn't even have to be that hard, find some "blank" walls in the game and put a door on them. Then create a few small pod rooms to put behind those doors.

Oh how I wish I had time to really help you with this. Curse You Real Life Responsibilties!!!

Yes, I've contemplated something similar myself. Heck, maybe even the computer from DownUnder and the Phantom are at odds from one another? Do I sense the start of a faction war?

I played the gensis shadowrun game a couple years back using other means, very fun game. Reminds me a lot of fallout but with the addition of the "cybersphere" realm.

Very, VERY old game, you can probably find it on any abandonware site. I played it back when an Apple IIe was state of the art. Actually I am sure it is on an abandonware site, I played it again about two years ago. As long as you don't mind bad graphics the game is actually really fun. Bring back memories of when computer bulletin boards were around.

If you could make something like a "deck" from neuromancer work that would allow you to connect to any computer in the game. That is if some kind of script could be written that would work. If I remember correctly in neuromancer you could connect at any "jack" but there were limited numbers of them. Connecting to different jacks took you to different parts of cyberspace, until you got the software upgrade that allowed you to cross cyberspace boundaries.

Maybe when you complete the uplink in down under that also connected the uplink for all the other A.I. so now "cyberspace" is alive again, Since it would all be wireless there is no need to worry about reconnecting all the down power and phone lines. But there could be a quest to restore power at one of the power stations to finish bringing the matrix back online with all the wired computers and mainframes.

just throwing my 2 cents in here:

would it be possible to develop a CRAFT-like script that applied to terminals? that way it would retain compatibility with the vanilla game, and also other mods that add custom terminals.

this looks like a very interesting mod; i'll check it out as soon as i can.

Seems pretty awesome. Agreed that a global script attached to every terminal would be ideal, but hey, I like it as is anyway. :D

I hope this leads to some kind of terminal overhaul. Seriously - the terminals in the vanilla game were either alternative unlockers for doors, or filler information. No real need to use them.

Maybe check out http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1111720-wipz-tile-mania/? You could re-tex them into a computer environment.

I'm definitely affected by the fact that I'm currently reading Mona Lisa Overdrive, but I really like the simulated environments that gibson's A.I.s walk around in. Victorian and oppressive, winding passageways that go on and on and on....I think TIle Mania is perfect and not even necc computerized.

and I'd also take a cue from bethesda AND gibson and say that coming round a corner and seeing an impassive little girl with a blank grin - can you make bullets pass through an npc? - is sometimes scarier than monsters.

Maybe you can tie in discovery of Vault Tec being involved in starting the war, or even taking advantage of the opportinity. Say, for example, that some higher level Vault Tec CEO sees the chaos just around the corner and decides to coordinate a tactical nuclear attack against certain US targets. Basically VTec would be playing both China and the US against each other towards their own plans. Just got done with the Jericho series, so I'm drawing from its story. The Enclave would basically be Vault Tec's own private military, intended to swoop in to pick up the pieces and rebuild the United States under their rule. As much of the Enclave's west coast and east coast bases have been conquered throughout the various Fallout games they would likely be rooted somewhere in the central US. The Brotherhood would be the clear opposition, being 'guardians of the old', intent on restoring the US government proper, and all sorts of civil war fun can later ensue.

It's at least semi lore friendly, since the Enclave was supposed to be the leftovers of some shadow government and Vault Tec set up their Vaults as experiments in the first place. Again drawing from the plotline of Jericho, maybe the quests could be worked up to obtaining and protecting an undetonated nuke intended to be used in the attacks but assumed lost. This would be the 'smoking gun', evidence of one of the greatest crimes comitted in the history of man.

I know this all would require a massive amount of work, and maybe it's not entirely in line with the initial idea of the mod. Just thought I'd throw my two cents in, anyway.
