NPC perception of Dragonborn

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:25 am

Games are still in their infancy when it comes to on-the-fly interaction between the avatar and NPCs. We all know of the cliche that is the Hero who can save the realm/world/universe but is still needed to go fetch something fairly trivial. This maybe fine when beginning on a new game, but once halfway thru and the NPCs may have heard tales of your adventures, still cannot get who they are trying to sell some rations to. I'm thinking Eddie Izzard's brilliant Darth Vader/ Death star sketch. snip

My hope is that Skyrim is able to better convey the sense of who you are in the world once you have a few dragons under your belt. And hopefully not always be rescuing kittens from trees so to speak.

Thoughts?

If quests are given out through a dynamic system, this should be included.

Of course, it's important to be aware that there *is* no photography, going unnoticed isn't impossible.

I see what you mean, but on the topic of rescuing kittens... Dunno where you live, but where I am, firemen get called by people all the time for all sorts of menial tasks. The whole "I've got a pesky goblin in my field - oh hey, I'm going to bug the crap out that guy who kills dragons, he can get me rid of it" is not that unrealistic a reasoning for your basic person. :P Hero refuses : "whine whine who do you think you are ? Think you're better than me ?"

Now I get that to be interesting, NPC in a game should react more like random villagers react to a hero in a story, than like actual people would. Still, I'm always amused at things that take down the whole hero thing a bit. And anyway, I don't think we'll come short when it comes to epics.

Speaking of being famous, I would like to see an imposter who's cashing in on the player's fame.

Wouldn't it break the game a little if after you've completed some of the main story then there would be a bunch of quests off limits to you?

I think we should be just grateful for the occasional greeting that references one of our many achievements (eg grand champion) possibly a positive disposition change also.

I agree, but by the same token reputation could be magnified and blown out of proportion by NPCs thru basic story telling and gradual embellishment.

Fair point on breaking the game. I suppose it will be a few years yet before we have the tech/software tools available to game designers to better carry this off.

Interesting. Perhaps a little more Fable-ish if you don't mind me saying, but a cool idea.

Considering what we've heard about Radiant Story, it may be that this is already in the game. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to also factor in the player's reputation or progress on the main quest with Radiant Story events and quests. Although certainly, for hand-placed quests, I wouldn't want some of them to be closed off just because I made a name for myself, but since Radiant Story is intended to tailor random quests to your choices in the game, I wouldn't really mind if it also took into account my progress in the main quest.
