Anyone Notice the Downhill Slope of Movies Lately?

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:05 am

When you say pirates, you surely don't mean the Pirates of the Caribbean, do you? Johnny Depp has captured yet another soul with his wit and charm. They're on what, their fifth installment now?

The fact that they're on the fifth POTC isn't a good thing. It shows that hollywood will just milk all the money they can get instead of producing good stories. The late Pirates of the Carribean movies have been pretty terrible.

When I was a teenager movies like Nightmare on Elm st. and Hellraiser were pretty scary flicks. Today, those movies are like late night comedies compaired to films like Saw and The Hills Have Eyes. Everyone is desensitized. Todays generation is like we want more movies and we want them now (same can be said for video games). This is why everything is rushed, over the top action, blood, gore, and poorly written.

Most movies entertain me so I don't notice it. :D

Exactly what i would say when it comes to this same thing about games :hehe: Movies i don't really care about

...or Plan 9 from Outer Space.

You mean the one where you could see the fishing line holding a miniature UFO over a city backdrop? (Or was this a "that's the joke" thing that i missed?)

The only genre where I can barely find any good films is comedy. Hangover was the last comedy movie I found funny.

Not this again...
The past isn't some magical realm where everything was great, you're just experiencing nostalgia.

Really no, there have always been crappy games, and there have always been good games, you just forget about the bad games quicker.

Video games are either getting crappier or there is just more crappier ones out there. (No offence devs)

IMO, ever since the lord of the rings, and pirates movies, it seems that movies are just beng made as fast as possible. I remember when it took forever to make a movie, and the actors actually had time to perfect their lines before it was shoved on to the big screen. It seems now that they introduce a movie and then a month later it is out in theaters and they totally svck. I have thought a lot of movies were going to be great, such as the Green Hornet and the newest harry potter but they were badly put together IMO. The best movies so far for me have been "How to Train Your Dragon," which I thought was going to be a silly kids movie, and then there was "The Eagle." Even The Eagle wasn't all it could've been. Whats going on??

Have you heard of something called The Golden Age of Hollywood? I think you'd be surprised to learn that back in the day studios were pumping out formula-adhering, quickly produced, shallow scripted films faster than game devs pump out Halo copycats today.

Actors signed a contract. And that contract could last anywhere from a couple of films to two decade's worth of films. The studios were more interested in milking as much money out of the actors' presence as possible. They weren't interested in unique scripts.

This happened in and around the 50's, by the way.

Error. Does not compute. :bonk:

It does depend on time of year. Most of the good movies come out in summer or just before the awards season.

Ugh.... another one of these http://evilbender.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/farnsworth.gif?w=460 threads. Though this year so far has been remarkably slow, nothing I want to see. Hell even the big summer flicks coming don't look all that appealing.

When there's money around, there's no ambition to be found, and vice versa.

I think it was in the 70's in Hollywood that there's a small money issue, but the 70's gave out some movies that are now considered classics, so...
Yeah, let's hope they get poor over there again, then some really nice movies will come along.

Actually I'm 19...
Cartoons are where it's at. Every one of those "Pixar" style digital films I've seen has been fantastic. How To Train Your Dragon, Tangled, The Incredibles, Wall-E...all of them great movies.Edit: I even liked Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. :P

agreed. The animated movies have been the best ones I have seen for awhile. I will agree that true grit was good (I saw that on some other post), but I mean meh.... I guess it takes a lot to entertain me at the moment. Sometimes I will think a movie is awesome, then other times I will watch the movie again and think... What the heck? Kinda like Avatar. baha!

What do you mean lately? This has been going on since the 80's. Crap movie after crap movie after crap movie. Now it's crap remake or sequal after crap remake or sequal. Hollywood has nothing Original anymore. Just like WWE wrestling, it's all the same story with different characters.

Kinda reminds me of Jay Sherman's rant on Hollywood---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOUqaVp1Gg8 . Skip to 2:20 for his essay.

I'm not saying there aren't quality movies. I can add many more to your list. Only in comparison, we are not getting the same amount of timeless quality blockbusters and epic movies we used to get.

Movies always slope downhill, until the abominable snow monster catches them, that is.

That's about all I can muster up.. I've never really "got" why people calling things downhill never seems to die.

I don't see a downhill slope on movies. I think Movies today are just as good as movies from the 80's or the 90's, heck maybe even better due to technology.
