Arrr...I can poke you in the toe with a rusty nail, thus giving you an infection and causing you to have it amputated, if you'd like us to call you Stumpy The Seafaring Pirate. Or just Stumpy for short... :P

What has this to do with Japans nuclear ridden air/sea water rushing to West Coast American shores? I will call my friend Stumpy to sail over here and rescue me, should this come to pass. :P

I would laugh if all of the reactors started exploding and sent all kinds of toxic nuclear crap to the west coast and our faces started melting off, just to say to you naysayers it can happen.

Wait, I wouldn't laugh at that.
The funny thing about nuclear reactors: they are specifically designed to withstand massive impacts.

I could see it now:
"What sort of weapon do we have that can damage a nuclear reactor core?"
"A nuke, sir."
"That's totally redundant! I love it!" :P

4. From there launch it at Mars Sol
Fixed. :P

The funny thing about nuclear reactors - they are specifically designed to withstand a 747 (or thereabouts) crashing into them at full speed.

I could see it now:
"What sort of weapon do we have that can damage a nuclear containment vessel?"
"A nuke, sir."
"That's totally redundant! I love it!" :P

Heehee, you know that saying, "Her face could launch a thousand ships" ? I know some faces that could damage a nuclear containment vessel.

Mine would be one of them. :P

We can bury the waste for now, at least until we can figure out a better solution....

Or we just put more money into cold fusion nuclear power, and get that off the ground......<----best solution.

I was reading about 4th and 5th generation nuclear power plants and they will not be ready for production till sometime after 2030. Seems like a long time huh?

All in all I am not overly worried. However I do hear the officials form the power plants have misled people many times in the past about safety, radiation and repairs and only later admit the real issues when they were caught.

As much as I agree that the media looks for new ways to scare us, at the same time I also feel they easily swallow the official reports, or don't question them enough. I can not really blame them. If you start questioning the creditability of the officials, then you undermine the recognized authority figures effectively neutering the leadership. Its a fine line.

it would not surprise me if one major reason for not telling the public the whole truth is they don't have a solution. Full disclosure would add to the discontent and fear. If there are bits of radioactive debris that flew off and scattered across the ocean, making its way around the worlds water supply... could you really stop it anyway. Its best to say the effect will be negligible and let us go on with our lives.

From the Chernobyl blast some official "UNSCEAR" reports stated that only about 4000 deaths were caused up to 2004. However many other less official reports and studies put the total number closer to 985,000 deaths due to various illness caused by the radiation. Thats is a darn big gap. The truth is still not known.

reading through this and the only bit that I can think to add is the...physics / chemistry that radiation traveling through water has so much more other mass to disperse against compared to through air. It really shouldn't be a huge problem over distance, regardless of the type of actual problem that is occurring.

Where do you think uranium and other radioactive minerals come from? Underground. From a long time ago.

Uranium ore is not nearly as radioactive as the enriched fuel used in the powerplants.

It's win-win. We get rid of the waste, and in the off-chance there are evil aliens on Mars we are doing the modern-day equivalent of catapulting a dead, disease-ridden cow over the city wall to slowly kill those inside.

But what if they aren't evil? You wouldn't want to take the risk of slowly killing brain meltingly cute puppy-eyed space kittens, would you :teehee:

Seriously, space elevators are still science fiction. And even then there are things that could go wrong, a launch gone wrong and you have a high atmosphere radiation bomb.

Besides, we have to think about the archeologists of the future! They'll probably be dumb enough to break into even the most secure underground waste storage site looking for pretty 21st centruy baubbles.

Not this again...
If you're in Japan, i'd suggest you to get out of there while you still can. If you live somewhere else, then I've got something to say for you...
